By now, everyone has caught word that the InterContinental Manila after its owners, Ayala Land, have decided to close its doors after 46 years to transform the area into a modern gateway. With consumer preferences constantly evolving and competition in the hospitality industry always fierce, running a hotel for 46 years is undoubtedly a milestone. During its existence, the InterContinental Manila established itself as a well-regarded institution and a place Filipinos would not only stay but also celebrate life’s best moments and make memories in. Our friends write:

InterContinental Manila is the longest operating international chain hotel in the Philippines. When the hotel first opened its doors to the global community on April 11, 1969, it did so as part of the original InterContinental Hotels Corporation portfolio, under the Pan American World Airways (Pan Am) umbrella. It holds the distinction of being the first 5-star deluxe hotel in Makati and the second InterContinental hotel to open in Asia.

Over the years, InterContinental Manila received numerous awards and citations from both local and foreign institutions. As a true leader in the Philippine scene, even the hotel’s restaurants are established favorites among notable Filipino personalities. A head concierge of the hotel, the late Angeles Pongco, is regarded as the “Father of Philippine Conciergerie” for having mentored many Filipino head concierges and for being the President of Les Clefs d’Or Philippines from 1993 to 2002. He was a member of the Concierge Advisory Board together with the head concierges of InterContinental Paris, Washington, Bali, Beirut and Caracas. He was given the title of Honorary International President of Les Clefs d’Or posthumously in recognition of his many contributions to the profession in 2007. The hotel’s Jeepney Restaurant, was also witness to daily meetings of Filipino journalists and men in power since 1972.

And as the grand dame bids farewell this month, the hotel has a slew of offers to give its most loyal patrons a chance to make lasting memories:

  • A special room rate offer of 4600++ PHP per night, inclusive of buffet breakfast for two persons, internet access, and 50% room rate on the second night. The rate is valid for stays from November 27-30, and December 4-7, 11-14 and 18-30.
  • A Heritage Christmas feast for four persons for only 4,600++ PHP at The Jeepney.
  • The hotel’s signature and all-time favorite dessert, the Crepe Samurai will be on sale at The Jeepney for only 460++ PHP for the small size and 1460++ PHP for the big size.

  • Chef Billy King, executive chef from 1986-1988, will recount his days at the hotel and impress with his French cuisine also at Prince Albert Rotisserie on December 9.
  • On December 30, the hotel will relive an era on its Euphoria Disco night, featuring music from Juan Miguel Salvador and the Authority band, as well as the greatest hits from the 80’s spun by reigning DJ’s of the decade.
