A 118 IQ Commenter Stops By

Posted on the 19 December 2018 by Calvinthedog

Jules: Just fooling around and stumbled on this site. 118 score at age 59, forcibly retired a couple of years ago.

It’s a very nice score. You could get a Master’s Degree for sure. A BA is just obvious. An MD would be a hard slog, but you could do it. A JD would be even harder, but if you were lucky, you could squeak it out. A PhD is asking a bit much, but you might even be able to pull that off if you moved Hell and high water.

It’s a nice score because some of you are quite smart, seemingly as smart as I am at 30 points higher, but many of you are quite normal and extroverted, and that helps as much in success as brains. You folks often have good social skills. The problem as IQ gets into my range is that people start getting weird and that tends to cause problems and negate a lot of the good effects of the IQ. Case in point: me.

I worked at Three Arch Bay in Laguna Beach, one of the top 10 wealthiest communities in the US. They were not geniuses, but many of them were right around your range. And these were the richest people in the country.

The rich are not stupid at all. They are pretty damn smart, but they’re typically not geniuses. They’re not intellectuals. They like to live, laugh and have fun.

I am part of the population that does not think I am particularly smart, nor does it really bother me.

Yes, people with scores around that range often don’t think they are very smart. I always have to remind them of how smart they are. 118 is is in the top 13th percentile in intelligence. You are smarter than 87% of the population! That’s pretty damn smart, is it not?

And yes, folks around your range don’t really care about IQ, and they are often hostile to discussions of it. They are often IQ denialists, get mad when the subject is brought up, and try to shut down the discussion. I think it is because they are insecure about their score and don’t think it is high enough. But that view is irrational. You’re smarter than 87% of the population and somehow you’re not that smart?! What!?

I was always curious though why others thought I could figure out issues that I knew nothing about!

If you are smarter than 87% of the population, you yourself might not believe it, but the people around you are going to notice for sure.

I tend to get bored pretty quick…

That’s a good feature. Tends to indicate high intelligence.

I dated an 18 year old girl five years ago. She was wicked smart, one of the smartest 18 year old girls I have ever met. Her IQ was 115.
