6 Rules for safe campfire cooking

When we go camping, what most of us look forward to be the time by the fire, having a campout? But where there is fire there is always danger, the risk of fires going out of control, burns etc…

Here are some rules to be maintained so that you can enjoy a hazard free cookout while camping:

  • Build the fire in the right spot

If you have a fire pit then there is nothing like it. But never build a fire near a building or tree. Build it in a free open area, free from hanging branches or trees, grass or other debris.

Determine the purpose of your campout fire. If it is for entertainment then build a fire using a log in the center and other logs slanting around it in a conical shape.

If the purpose of the fire is to cook, then arrange dry logs in a v shape.

  • Steer clear of plastics

Do not use anything in plastic or rubber near the flame. Metal utensils and tools are recommended. Plastics will melt easily.

As a matter of fact, it is better if you buy the equipment that you use on the flame from a shop that deals with utensils and tools especially for the purpose of cooking in the outdoors.

  • Cooking method

There are several methods by which you can cook your food on an open fire. You can opt for the more simple method where everyone including the kids has fun by cooking food on skewers.

The other option is to plant a grill grate over the flames so that you can have a mini barbeque going on. Whichever the method, just make sure you keep your hands out of the flame because burns are nasty business.

  • Be careful of food you cook on flame

You cannot just cook whatever you please on the open fire. Foods that contain too much fat is dangerous as when the fat melts, it will drip down and can cause the fire to flame outwards.

Again, when cooking over a flame, even if it is on the grill, avoids foods with fat or ones you have to use oil to cook. Oils attract flame or cause the flames to flare-up.

  • Kids to join in

You can ask the kids to join in to set up the fire, cook and even clear up afterwards. It will build their confidence and even make them feel useful.

Just set a few rules about the space they should keep between themselves and the fire or the stuff that goes in the fire stays there.

  • Clear out the fire after done

When you are done with enjoying the camp fire for a cookout or simply to sing around, it is very important to put the fire out and clean the spot.

Douse the fire with a bucket of water or sand, whichever is convenient. Once the embers or ashes stop hissing, rake the remains and repeat the process of pouring sand or water on the spot till it becomes wet and smothered.

Enjoy your campout but remember to play it safe when it comes to campfire cooking. If you follow the above rules, you can be assured of campfire cooking safety.
