5 Things Your Parents Got Wrong About Food

Eating habits are traditional practices which pass on through generations. Bad eating practices are universally followed, people stuff food when they are working or watching movies, television.etc. Eating habits followed are junk food cravings, feeling hungry at night, eating when emotional are bad for health and it also increases weight. Most people eat incorrect food because that’s what they have been eating since childhood. As a kid they were habituated to eat particular type to food because their parents ate the same food.

Some wrong about food which should not be followed

  • As a kid parents always made compulsory to finish the plate. One keeps eating only because the food is served or the plate is full, it does not make one realize that the stomach is full. This habit can be altered by taking small portions of food. Leaving food on plate is all right.
  • Food eaten in a hurry does not make one realize that the person is full. Food should be eaten slowly. Post eating one should wait for 20 minutes, and stop eating if one feels stuffed.
  • During childhood sweets, chocolates or desserts were used to bribe kids. These things are eaten not because one wants to, but only because one feels that he/she has done a good job. Sweets or desserts are good to maintain sugar levels but not to incentivize someone.
  • Parents always said no to snacks before lunch or dinner. But eating snacks increases an individual’s appetite and manages the hunger before eating a meal. A rather small portion of healthy snacks is a good choice than a meal. These snacks can include fruits, vegetables, sprouts, nuts, carbohydrates, chocolate milk, etc.
  • Parents never encouraged eating all the time during the day, but eating every three to four hours is healthy. An empty stomach can unnecessarily increase weight.
  • Parents always said that exercise immediately after a meal is a strict no-no. But a healthy intake of food and exercise after one hour can maximize workout and give effective results.

Drinking water keeps body hydrated and even helps in weight loss. Also drinking water before meal can reduce the size of your meal, which results in the fewer intakes of calories. Plain water can also substitute for a lime water or vitamin water. Carrots intake in salad has nutrients and keeps eyes healthy with its vitamin A. Also sweet potatoes, orange veggie, spinach also are good reserves of vitamin A. Eating fried food increases obesity which increases the risk of vision loss, diabetes, chronic conditions and other related diseases. Eating at night increases calorie consumption and results in weight gain as they are stored as fat. To reduce the night food cravings one should brush teeth at night before sleeping, which gives indications that eating time is finished. Intake of sugary drinks, cold drinks or tea shows symptoms of diabetes. Kids should establish habit of eating high fiber food and drink lot of water.
