5 Healthy carb substitutes to bread

In the past it was unheard of to avoid carbohydrates in one daily meal. As a matter of fact it was the main part of any meal. It is only now that that carbohydrates are now called ‘carbs’ and considered evil.

We cannot completely cut out bread from our diet as it responsible for giving us energy and even keeping blood sugar levels regulated.

Bread is what we consume for our need of carbs. What we fail to realize is that there are healthier substitutes to bread.

Here are what we can replace bread with and enjoy higher carbohydrate counts:

1) Chickpeas

Chickpeas

Chickpeas are like a whole meal. They rack up a lot of nutrients with minimal fat, calories and sugar.

If you eat a cup of chickpeas you get 35 grams of carbs, 6 grams sugar, 10 grams fiber, 11 grams protein and calories as low as 210.

2) Apples

Apples

Apples are healthy and filling due to the fact that they contain a lot of fiber and carbs. It is said that a medium size apple contains as much as 114 calories and nearly 30 carbs.

3) Raisins

Raisins

Raisins might not be the right choice for the calorie conscious or those who are limiting their carbs. But it is packed with the goodness of carbs and potassium so keeping it as a part of your diet is good for you.

A quarter cup of raisins has more than twice the amount of carbs as compared to a slice of bread.

4) Soy Milk

Soy Milk

No one would ever guess that milk would contain carbs. But soya milk is an exception due to the fact that it is derived from soya beans. Soya beans are rich in complex carbs and when it is converted into the drinkable state these carbs are transferred. A glass of soy milk contains approximately 4 grams of fat, 15 grams carbs, 8 grams of protein and just 131 calories.

5) Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes

This is a wonderful alternative to starchy potatoes. Potatoes pack a bunch of calories apart from the essential carbs.

Instead opt for this sweet root vegetable that has just the right amount of essential carbs, not too much calories and a bunch of other essential vitamins and minerals.

Chop them, slice them, bake them, steam them and curb those junk food cravings away.

These healthy foods have a lot more right carbs as compared to bread along with fiber, protein and other nutrients. It’s time to replace that bread loaf for these healthy substitutes. When you need carbs in your diet, it’s not only bread that can offer them to you.
