Diabetic patients feel hungry all the time. Carbohydrates are essential for diabetic patients too. So what are carbs? Carbohydrates are basically sugar-based molecules found in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and dairy products. They make up about 45% to 65% of calories in a healthy diet.

The question arises how much of carbs should they eat? Instead of trying to avoid carbs completely, practice planning your diabetes diet with everything in moderation. The right carbs can and should be part of a balanced diet.

Here are 5 good carbs for diabetic patients that are also rich in fiber, protein an d other nutrients that slow down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates which lead to the blood sugar levels that do not fluctuate too much.

  • Lentils

Lentils are a great source of fiber and protein. Another reason for eating lentils is that they contain potassium that helps in lowering blood pressure.

And it has been found that one in three diabetic patients suffer from high blood pressure.

  • Berries

Berries contain a lot of antioxidants that help in regulating blood sugar. They contain lesser sugar than other fruits and are rich in fiber, so you don’t have to worry about your blood sugar to spike.

  • Oatmeal

Classic oats without sugars delivers fiber due to which it curbs hunger usually found in cases of high blood sugar. Studies have shown that eating it regularly on the long run will lower bad cholesterol and regulate sugar levels.

  • Sweet Potato

Sweet potato has a higher fiber content that its counterpart, the white potato. These are digested slowly and thus help in controlling blood sugar.

  • Greek Yogurt

For those patients who suffer from low bone density this is a great way t pack in the calcium and low healthy carbs.
