5 Factors that affect fertility in men

It is not just women who suffer from fertility issues but men do too. It seems unfair to first put the reason of not conceiving on the woman because men can be just as responsible for the woman not getting pregnant.

There are a lot of factors that can affect the sperm quality of a man. In many cases the cause is physical, which is structural malfunction or swelling or any other physical factor.

Here are some lifestyle factors that can affect the sperm count or fertility in men:

5 Factors that affect fertility in men

  • Drinking and Smoking

Excessive alcohol consumption and smoking has been linked to lower sperm production, erectile dysfunction and decreased testosterone.

  • Age

As men age the volume of their sperm decreases and so does the volume of the chromosomally active sperm. You need active sperm to latch onto a female egg.

  • Diet

Research has proved that men who consume diet that is rich in saturated and trans fats have lower sperm count.

  • Weight

When men gain weight they also affect the quality of their sperm that in turn affects fertility. The presence of fat in the body itself is reason for the sperm to get inactive.

  • Stress

Stress can interfere with certain hormones that are needed to produce sperm. Severe or prolonged emotional stress, including problems with fertility, can affect your sperm count.

The first step to improving fertility is to identify the lifestyle factors that affect it and avoid them.
