If these questions apply to you, it might interest you to know that there are several organizations across the country for students who want to take action.
The Sierra Student Coalition
As you might guess, this is the student branch of the Sierra Club. This national chapter boasts over 13,000 high-school and college student members. With grassroots training programs and regional networks, this organization is instrumental in defining the next generation of environmental leaders. Its official headquarters is in Washington, D.C., but the chapter has more than 250 groups across the country.
From coal to oil, the Sierra Student Coalition tackles the Earth’s most daunting challenges and seeks to develop campaigns to find solutions. Completely “youth-run”—aside from a minimal support staff—this organization proves how capable people can be when they set their minds to something—regardless of age.
The Student Conservation Association
Around since the mid-1950s, this organization gives high-school and college-aged students the opportunity to get hands conservation experience. Members work to restore and protect everything from national parks, to green spaces and marine sanctuaries all across America.
From summer projects to internships and year-round community programs, there is definitely no shortage opportunities for those who are interested. With 4,000 interns and volunteers, it’s not hard for the Student Conservation Association to log more than 2 million hours of conservation service hours per year. It’s headquartered in New Hampshire, but also boasts regional offices in Washington D.C., California, Pennsylvania and Washington State.
Student Environmental Action Coalition
A little different than the previous entries, the Student Environmental Action Coalition doesn’t just focus on conservation efforts, but also incorporates political, economic and cultural concerns as well. Prepared to go to extreme lengths to get their messages across, some members have even risked being arrested when taking a stand against sexism, racism, heterosexism and more.
Started in the late eighties by a group of college students attending the University of North Carolina, the group had over 1,700 student participants in just its second year.
Supporting many causes, the organization’s primary campaign is The Campus Climate Challenge, which strives to fight global warming and its effects. Present on over 70 campuses, the group’s message is quickly spreading.
