20 Things I Hate About the Philippines

By Catswalks

I admit that I agree with some of his points but some points can be attributed to cultural differences.  For one, I don`t agree that all the beautiful girls in the Philippines are lady boys ;-).  I guess the thing that annoyed me the most about this video is not the content but how much conviction the host showed in his delivery of the reasons he hates the Philippines. If he truly hates it there then he should go home. What say you?

I have lived in the Philippines for a lot longer than Jimmy, and I enjoy living here. Does that mean that I have to love everything about the place? (I don't even love everything about my home town, but I still like being there.) If you don't like the criticisms Jimmy has, why don't you change things? (Even he, in the opening of his video, mentions the beauty and wonders the Philippines has to offer.) But, is the constant horn blowing annoying? Yes. Are there lots of cockroaches? Ask my daughters why they run down the street at night. (They are afraid of having cockroaches run across their feet.) Is it annoying - and completely inappropriate AND probably very unsanitary - to have roosters in residential areas? Well, in my humble opinion, yes. Would it be nice to see some public urinals for cab drivers so they wouldn't have to resort to using the nearest wall? I would have to say yes. And am I sometimes worried about how sanitary the public toilets are? Not just yes, but hell yes! (I carry my own toilet paper most of the time, but I don't have room in my bag for my own toilet seat.) Obviously some of the points Jimmy makes are tongue-in-cheek; there are plenty of good-looking Filipinas.

It must be said that people back home are aware of similar problems - when my mother goes for walks around her residential neighborhood, she takes a trash bag to pick up the garbage other people thoughtlessly throw out of their car windows, and I would criticize my home town for the fact that our transvestites - as cute as they are - are not nearly as beautiful as the ones here. (If you missed it, that is meant to be a joke - but it's true!)

The question is this: in the Philippines what stops people from solving problems? For example, why are there so few trash cans, why don't people use the ones available, why don't neighborhoods insist on better trash collection and why doesn't anyone criticize and humiliate people who throw the trash in the first place?

Don't get defensive about someone else criticizing your country; think about the points Jimmy makes and then make improvements so there is less to criticize. I am from the States, and believe me, I hear lots of people criticizing my country - often with just cause - but I still think I come from a great country. The Philippines, too, is a great country, and I will bet that even Jimmy loves living here, but every country has it's faults, and there is always room for improvement. Admitting the problems is the first step - and I'll bet most Filipinos would make some of the same criticisms as Jimmy does when they talk amongst themselves. Don't just sit around and complain about it - and don't get defensive when someone points out the faults in your country; do something to improve things.

This guy have some valid points but you also wonder why he stayed that long if he hates the place. This is a typical american abroad who is "kulang-sa-pansin" because of being a tightwad or no money to spend. And why he hates the Koreans? Is he jealous? Lesson: if you don't have money don't go abroad...stay in your f----ng backyard.

there's no point to get mad at him because he have point. our government should do what they need to do. how could we invite the foreigner's to visit and invest in our country if our government and our people not helping each other even in a simple way.:( i agree some of what he said. we need to wake-up and help. and please all people in our government should help too to keep our country good and not only to get money to our people. we paying you to solve and do something to make our country to be good like other country in asia.

I think he raises almost all valid points, except for the lady boys of course. Our citizens should be mad but rather than reacting negatively, as in asking them (the foreigners) to leave, but rather enforcing the laws effectively. Almost all things pointed out are somehow covered by an existing law that has not been enforced (except for the ladyboy and the whitetening cream).

The "state" of the public toilets are a reality and we continue to somehow endure using them. We somehow misconstrued "toiletry" as "tolerately." Try visiting the toilet at the delivery room of East Avenue Hospital in QC.

As to the guards, remember the mall shooting in Pampanga? there is actually lack of training for business consideration. Still, we no longer hear any news about it.

The cockroaches, it is an everyday insect. We see them in market places, meat, vegetable, fruit stand, etc and we still continue to buy food which we serve to our families at these markets. Try marketing in Sampaloc, Masinag, Galas. Balintawak public markets and tell me I'm lying.

To add to his list. walk down any secondary residential streets (not in a subdivision), see the dogshits!
