Yoga for Your Colon

By Healingyoga

Digestion gets a lot of press, doesn't it? There are cleanses, herbs, and a whole host of other techniques to ensure regular digestion. I'm a bit of a before and after picture of healthy digestion myself. No, I'm not going to share all of the gory details with you here (a girl's gotta have some privacy, after all), but suffice to say that I went from irregularity to right as rain over the span of a few years. There was a lot of trial and error and it was a wonderful learning experience in regards to what worked for me.

Twisting postures are often lauded as digestive helpers. Once, I actually did an ancient technique (which I'm blanking on the name at the moment) that required drinking numerous glasses of warm salt water while doing specific series of postures. Oh yes, I tried a lot of different things. In the end, I found that the simplest things worked wonders. Here are just a few of the things that I do on a regular basis to keep my colon happy and healthy:

  • I am a fan of drinking 8oz. of warm water with the juice of half a lemon every morning
  • My favorite postures for digestion are Rock PoseApanasana and Happy Baby
  • I give myself a Mayan Abdominal Massage daily (here's a PDF with basic instructions)
  • And one of my favorites is captured in this delightful TED video:

Oh yes, that's easier (and way more fun) than drinking warmed salt water and contorting your body for hours every morning!

Namaste!
