Wyoming Whiskey Outryder Review

Wyoming Whiskey Outryder is WW’s newest expression and it’s a combination of two different mashbills. The first one doesn’t meet the TTB requirements to be called either a rye or a bourbon so if bottled on its own it would be either an “American Whiskey” or a “Wyoming Whiskey”. The second is a bourbon and if you mixed the two mashbills together you’d end up with a high-rye bourbon, but they mixed the spirit together and that’s a whole different thing. Details below.

In Wyoming Whiskey’s Words: Wyoming Whiskey Outryder

“A straight American whiskey with higher rye content than our Small Batch Bourbon, but short of a true rye whiskey. Different and great. Perfect for sipping or making cocktails.

It’s crafted from two distinct mash bills distilled in November of 2011. The first mash bill contains 48% winter rye, 40% corn, and 12% malted barley and the second reflects a traditional bourbon mash bill of 68% corn, 20% winter rye, and 12% malted barley. In keeping with Wyoming Whiskey’s tradition, these grains are all non-GMO and grown in Byron, Wyoming by Rageth Farms.”

That mixing of two different whiskies, one completely unique, makes this an interesting whiskey because it doesn’t meet the TTB requirements for any particular style and so it’s been placed under the “Straight American Whiskey” category. What furthers that uniqueness, especially in the craft scene, is that it’s Bottled In Bond. A non-bourbon, non-rye Bottled In Bond whiskey. It’s unique by design, now let’s see if it’s unique in its delivery in the Wyoming Whiskey Outryder review.

EYE
Caramel

NOSE
Caramel, brownie-like cocoa, dried dark fruit, spice, vanilla custard and a light bit of oak and raw grain.

PALATE
Cinnamon and clove heavy spice, caramel, dried dark fruit, cocoa, vanilla custard and touches of oak and toasted bread.

FINISH
Medium drawl of spice, caramel, grain and vanilla.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Ok balance, medium body and an oily feel.

OVERALL
All-In-all the Wyoming Whiskey Outryder is a pretty decent whiskey. The aroma isn’t wildly complex, but it’s good. The palate is a bit more complex and delivers a big spicy whiskey that fades to a spicy finish. For being a high-rye it’s oddly sweet and I’m missing some of the more rustic and oaky notes that could add more dimension and depth to the whiskey. It comes in just a hair shy of the depth I look for in a B+ / daily drinker level whiskey.

Though I will say this for the Wyoming Whiskey folks, they’re really coming into their own lately and they’ve come a long way from their first releases. I liked their batch 36 and am enjoying this Wyoming Whiskey Outryder and it makes me excited to continue to see what these guys put out. They’re one of the craft guys I think have a serious shot of putting out world class whiskeys in the near future.
