With Garment Collecting H&M Gives Back

By Mamakbest @mamakbest

Long Live Fashion Box As the holiday season is in full swing, with only a week until Christmas, it is great to recognize corporations who realize the importance of giving back and making a difference. Not only does H&M believe all of their operations should run in a way that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable, they also incentivize customers with discounts for donating, which comes in handy while holiday shopping!

In February 2013 H&M launched a global initiative called Garment Collecting. Customers are encouraged to bring in unwanted garments of any brand and in any condition to H&M stores in all 53 markets to be given a new life.

H&M rewards customers who bring in their garments with a 15% discount on an item of your choice per bag donated.  The limit is 2 bags per customer per day.

The garments are separated in three groups:

  • Rewear –  clothing that can be worn again is sold as second-hand goods worldwide
  • Reuse – textiles that are no longer suitable to wear and converted into other products, such as cleaning cloths
  • Recycle – textiles that can’t be reused can be turned into textile fibres or used to manufacture products such as insulating materials for the auto industry

HM Conscious How it Works

Any revenue from the Garment Collecting program is invested in technology for recycling processes in textiles and social projects.   H&M partnered with I:CO and supports  organizations and social projects internationally through their Charity Star initiative.

Global Green is the Charity Star organization H&M funds in the United States.
