WINTER WORLD #1 Review

Posted on the 18 June 2014 by Geekasms @geekasms

Winter World takes us to a potential future where the world is covered by snow and ice.  Everything is frozen and the monolog we get from one of the characters says that nobody can remember it being any different.

The first thing that jumps out to me about Winter World is the wonderful Butch Guice art.  You think only so much can be done with a world covered in snow, but he manages to make it all look beautiful.

We are quickly introduced to our main characters Scully, Wynn and Rah-Rah.  Scully is the father figure, Wynn is the young girl that is traveling with him and Rah-Rah is a badger.  Yep, a badger.  Dixon does a great job of creating the relationship between Scully and Wynn as they travel across the frozen earth on foot until they come to an abandoned warship.  They are able to get some much needed supplies and transportation which leads them into trouble.

We don’t get a large cast throughout this first issue, but with Dixon handling the writing, it isn’t necessary.  I enjoyed the conversations between the main characters and am instantly interested in knowing more about them.  We end on a cliffhanger that has you turning the page just hoping it continued.

It’s hard not to compare this story to other apocalyptic stories like Mad Max, Waterworld and others.  What is different here is that I immediately liked Scully and Wynn.  Something always works about the grizzled older man and the spunky young girl.  It’s like they bring out the best in each other over and over again and it is proven once again here.
