Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

Today’s rye review is brought to us by my favorite American distillery: Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye. While I’m thrilled to see this whiskey appear on the market, it does make me wonder if Eddie isn’t spying on my diary somehow, because this is exactly the kind of thing I’ve been hoping for.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye Review

Non-chill filtered and delivered at its full proof glory, this is the kind of thing that shows off their talent with rye. They’ve been making rye whiskey non-stop since 1974 and stand among the longest-running rye whiskey makers active in America today; 46 years of rye whiskey making experience delivered without dilution.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye Review: Details and Tasting Notes

In Wild Turkey’s Words:

“Crafted in one of the few distilleries to remain dedicated to the art of rye whiskey, Rare Breed Rye is a blend of non-chill filtered rye. It is barrel-proof, meaning that it’s uncut, bottled directly from the barrels at the proof it is reached in those barrels. It is sister to award-winning Rare Breed bourbon and the first permanent super-premium rye in the Wild Turkey family.”

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Great balance, rounud full body and a warm oily feel.

This is a truly delightful rye. I’m all about what’s going on in this glass. It’s bold, it’s warm, it’s spicy, it’s oaky. it’s sweet… it’s just plain good!

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye Review: Overall and Score

Aroma has something clay-like and earthy to it but on the whole it’s warm, spicy and with enough oak to keep everything wonderfully aligned; Palate has a bigger oak and spice presence that also carries nice darkly sweet and candy shop sweet profiles; Finish is oak heavy but carries plenty of sweet and spicy notes to keep a good balance

A smoothly executed dram that screams rye without being dill-heavy and keeps me coming back for more. This Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye is a fantastic new addition to the WT lineup and can proudly sit side-by-side with the always fantastic Rare Breed Bourbon. This is the kind of rye whiskey I want on my shelf at all times and is giving the Pikesville Rye a run for its money for my favorite off-the-shelf rye.

SCORE: 4/5
