Why Mums Have Superpowers and a Challenge to Us All

By Yourfamilysurvivalcoach @shari_brewer

I was chatting with a friend this morning, and I’m sure you know where this is going. (Especially if you are a mum, ’cause you’d have your ESP superpower switched on, right?) This topic can become a bit of a recurring theme when busy women, who may be a bit tired, get together and end up comparing, discussing and dissecting the never ending reality of being a mum in a hectic world. It’s certainly reassuring to realise that none of us are dealing with these issues in isolation, so that’s a good thing I’m guessing.

In trying to be many things to many people it’s no wonder that mums really do have superpowers. Maybe capes should be handed out to new mums when discharging from the maternity hospital. Certainly more useful in the long term than a sample bag containing oversized sanitary pads and a tube of nipple cream! Mums, by nature, are expected to have supersonic hearing, enhanced vision as well as the capacity to do 25 million things at once and of course right now. No wonder so many of us are tired and need to STOP just to make some time to look after ourselves.

What are your mum superpowers? What are you truly skilled at?

Here are a few of my very special super talents … do you relate?

  • seeing that the toilet roll needs changing?
  • noticing the dirty dishes piled mile high in the sink?
  • knowing that the washing in the machine needs hanging out?
  • hearing the cat meow that she is hungry?
  • arranging and juggling school drop offs, pick ups, band practice, doctor appointments as well as grocery shopping?
  • knowing what the bank balance is, what bills need to be paid by when and how much is left over until payday?
Although my list above is almost (hmm but not quite
;)
) in jest, being multi-skilled is something that we women often take for granted and over-look instead of embracing it as a genuine and worthwhile strength.I’m throwing out a challenge today. I’m going to make a concerted effort – and challenge you to, also – that when things seem all too bloody hard and the body and mind feels it’s being stretched beyond capacity, instead of getting frustrated and pulling my cranky pants on, I will accept the superpowers that I’ve been blessed with as a busy mum.How about you, supermums? Who’s with me?
