Who “Owns” the Internet?

Posted on the 10 December 2013 by Jureklepic @jkcallas

The joke is that Al Gore invented the Internet, right? So who technically owns it? Good question and I’m sure that a lot of different people have a lot of different answers. But we can tell you who dominates the Web when it comes to overall traffic.

While the top few companies on the list probably won’t surprise you, a few after that might. I don’t know about everyone, but I don’t always think about websites that are big in other countries. But there are definitely some international power players on this list from Mashable. The corresponding article says that just about one out of every seven people on the entire planet visited a Google site during the month of July. That equates to over 1.2 billion people. Crazy!

The other power players on this list include Microsoft, Facebook, Yahoo!, and Amazon for U.S. based companies. Some of the international web giants include Baidu, Alibaba, and Shohu.com.

I’d say that it’s hard to argue that Google is the true owner of the Internet as far as traffic volume is concerned. Google dominates the search engine field, with about 1.16 billion of all searches being conducted through it. That is a LOT of searches – which is why many businesses focus on making their business look good in the eyes of Google. Google also has a lock on the mobile advertising sector. The search giant commands 53% of the market. Compare that to its next closest competitor, Facebook, which has 16% of the market. Another perhaps surprising fact is that more people use the Google Maps app than the Facebook app. Google maps commands 54% of uses who use apps, while Facebook only gets 44%. I found some of these statistics to be rather surprising!

This infographic that shows all of these statistics was made in honor of Google’s 15th birthday. It’s hard to believe that the media giant has only been around for fifteen years. It feels as though it’s been around forever. Though sometimes there is concern that Google is becoming a bit big-brotherish, there is no denying that it’s one of the most useful tools on the web.

Google even has “hidden tricks” – for example, type “do a barrel roll” into the search bar. After you hit enter, your webpage will do a barrel roll.  Overall, I think Google is a great tool that both businesses and personal users alike can use to get great results.
