Where Are They Now?: Colony Wars

If you have been following the Geeks Crew from the start, you should know that we have a hard-on for Sci-fi fantasy games, specifically the ones that takes place in outer space.  Shoot down enemy space craft on land or outer space, upgrade your weapons, destroy big ships and hunt down space pirates, great fun.  For us, we dare call the Colony Wars series as the Ace Combat of Outer Space, and you know how much we love our Ace Combat games.

The Series consists of three games – Colony Wars, Colony Wars: Vengeance and Colony Wars: Red Sun.  All three games were developed by Psygnosis.  For this review, we will emphasize more on the 3rd installment, Red Sun.

What makes this game so good?

For it’s time, the game was revolutionary.  Although there were previous games similar to it, Colony Wars lets us free to roam and destroy any ship that we wish.  Simple yet fluid controls makes it feel like we are pros at maneuvering our space ship and shooting down bogeys.  The graphics was very descent for a PS1 game.

The story isn’t so bad, it pretty much boils down to an epic battle between a rebel and a powerful empire.  While this is happening, you are either a mercenary or a soldier destined to save the human race who are currently oblivious of the dangers that lies ahead.  The series pretty much revolves around that plot which is quite common for most a sci-fi games.

In addition to that, the music was top notch.  We believe that legendary games are born not from gameplay and graphics alone,  music plays a major part as well.  The music in Red Sun portrays a very classic sci-fi movie atmosphere.  Here are our top 3 picks:

What we expect from the sequel

Multiplayer- It’s a standard for games nowadays.  We don’t expect much, probably some co-op game or team death match, any would be fine.

Epic Battles- We want to see countless of super huge space armadas shooting the crap out of each other while we zoom past them and battle the small ships.  With the new technology that we have today, I expect some amazing explosions and details during fire fights.  Imagine yourself, going full speed through two huge opposition exchanging proton lasers.

Customizable Ships and Pilots- Thanks to Mass Effect and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, they set the standard for epic RPG games by letting players customize their characters.  We would like to see this for the next Colony Wars game.  We believe that this will be the primary ingredient for creating an epic sequel for this awesome series.

Wing Man- It’s pretty much like Ace Combat or Mass Effect where you fly with 2 or 3 dudes backing you up.  One ship could specialize in proton torpedoes while the other is good with shield cannons or droids; the possibilities are endless.

Conclusion

If you are a fanatic Ace Combat gamer or anything that involves flying, please try this game out.  The sheer atmosphere the game brings to the player by becoming a bad ass space pilot is what makes this a rare gem.  There aren’t many games that are structured like this today, though we would love to see more.
