You have decided to spend your Christmas in Naples.First thing to do: you have to go to Via San Gregorio.
Second thing to do: you have to attend the performance “Christmas in Cupiello’s house” written by Edourdo De Filippo – a great performance that bring you in the traditional Neapolitan Christmas celebrated a few decades ago.
Third thing to do: visit the Museum of San Maritino.
The list is definitely much longer, because there are a lot of things and monuments to visit in Naples. You can not get bored at all!
In any case, we dedicate to the Museum of San Martino. Already the building is a chef d’oeuvre. The monastery - that houses the museum - dates from the fourteenth century and it stands on a hill with a spectacular view of the city. It was renovated from the XVI to the XVII century.
The sections to visit are many and interesting. You surely have to visit the cabinets of drawings and prints. The collection is vast and interesting and - to have a complete view on this topic - you have to visit in addiction to the collection of the Museum of Capo di Monte (always in Naples).
Museo di San Martino
In the section of the decorative arts, you will find some ceramic works of great value and beautifully decorated, following the tradition of the centuries from the sixteenth to the nineteenth. A broad overview of a sector closely linked to the artistic craftsmanship of the geographic area and therefore its history.If you want to have an overview of what happened in the nineteenth century in Naples, I suggest you to visit the pictorial section dedicated to the painting of the nineteenth century. In addition to being a collection of the high value art works, it is also a direct link to what was the history of Naples and the South of Italy. I am convinced that in order to understand the social contest of a place, you need to understand the art and the history of the area. This museum can be an interesting opportunity to do it.
You may ask me then what all this can be related with your Christmas visit. I’m coming! I have just introduced you the sections of this wonderful museum - that I suggest you - but our goal is to visit the section dedicated to the Christmas cribs. The collection Cuciniello- with a crib of great artistic value - was donated to the museum: the statuettes of the shepherds go back to the XVII - XIX century. The crib is composed by different scenes. The peculiarity of this crib is that the statues were not created by the craftsmen but by different sculptors. The clothes were sewn by some famous tailors and the lutes were created by the lutists of the conservatory : everything was reproduced with the utmost attention to the smallest detail. This is why the composition can be defined an art work . There are three main scenes: the "Tavern", "The Nativity" and the "Announcement". All the crib is composed of 800 pieces. There is the first representation of the nativity scene in this crib . In fact there are some large format polychrome wooden statues dated back to the fifteenth century, laminated with gold. The Nativity scene originally had about 43 statues but today there are only 12.
A visit to this museum is certainly interesting and mixes the traditions, the beliefs and the art.

Avete deciso di trascorre il Natale a Napoli. Prima cosa da fare: visitare Via San Gregorio. Seconda cosa da fare: vedere Natale in Casa Cupiello di Edourdo De Filippo, grandissima rappresentazione teatrale che vi trasporterà nel sapore natalizio del tradizionale natale napoletano di qualche decennio fa. Terza cosa da fare: visitare il Museo di San Maritino. La lista ovviamente è molto più lunga perché di cosa da fare e visitare a Napoli ce ne sono tantissime. Non potete annoiarvi di certo! In ogni caso dedichiamoci al Museo di San Martino. Un’opera d’arte già dal solo palazzo. La certosa che ospita il museo risale al XIV secolo e si erge su un colle da cui si ha una vista spettacolare della città. Fu rinnovato nei secoli che vanno dal XVI al XVII secolo. Le sezioni da visitare sono tante ed interessanti. Sicuramente è immancabile la visita al Gabinetti dei disegni e delle stampe. Al raccolta è vasta e interessante e per completare l’argomento bisognerebbe dare uno sguardo anche alla raccolta del Museo di Capo di Monte ( sempre a Napoli). Nella sezione delle arti decorative troverete degli oggetti far cui opere di ceramica di grande valore e finemente decorate secondo la tradizione dei secoli dal XVI al XIX. Un’ampia panoramica su un settore artistici legato strettamente alla produzione artigianale della zona e quindi alla sua storia. Se volete avere un panoramica di quello che successe nella Napoli dell’Ottocento vi suggerisco di visitare anche la sezione pittorica dedicata alla pittura dell’ottocento. Oltre ad essere una raccolta di opere d’arte di alto valore è anche un legame diretto con quello che fu il passato di napoli e del Mezzogiorno. Sono convinta che per capire il tessuto sociale di un determinato luogo si necessario avere una panoramica sull’arte e sulla storia che interessarono l’area. Questo museo può essere una opportunità interessante. Vi domanderete quindi cosa centri tutti questo con la vostra visita natalizia. Arrivo, arrivo! Vi ho solo introdotto delle sezioni di questo splendido museo che vi suggerisco di visitare, ma i nostro obiettivo è al sezione dei presepi. Al museo è giunta in dono la collezione Cuciniello con un presepe di grande valore artistico : le statuine dei pastori risalgono al XVII – XIX secolo. Il presepe è composto da differenti scene. La particolarità di questa composizione è che le statuine non furono create da artigiani ma da differenti scultori del tempo e gli abiti erano confezionati da famosi sarti, così a loro volta i liuti erano creati dai Liutai del conservatorio e quindi il tutto è riprodotto con la massima cura del particolare. Questo è forse il perché tale composizione possa essere definita una vera e propria opera d’arte. Ci sono tre scene principali la “Taverna”, la “Natività” e “l’Annuncio”. Tutto il presepe è composto da 800 pezzi. Qui in questa opera c’è la vera storia del presepe. Ci sono infatti nell’insieme alcuni esemplari del Quattrocento con statue lignee policrome laminate d’oro di grande formato. La scena della Natività originaria aveva circa 43 statuine ma oggi ve ne sono solo 12. Una visita sicuramente interessante e che mescola la tradizione, con le credenze, con l’arte. Ma in fondo non è questo il natale?
