When a silhouette says it all – is an image that is minimal in detail, yet still strong in its story telling qualities.
When covering a wedding day, I often start with capturing the build up and preparations with the bridal party. Its an important aspect, setting the scene and providing some lovely images both of the bride and her friends and family getting ready.
This image from Caroline & Dave’s Little Quarme wedding in Somerset, was of the bridal party getting ready at Northmoor House, an old victorian house close to the Exmoor National Park.
The light was extremely contrasty, with the girls putting the finishing touches to their make-up in front of the master bedroom window.
The contrasting light is something I wanted to embrace and use creatively. I could have used a reflector to boiunce the light back into the subjects to provide fill light, but this would have provided too much detail and distraction – an almost unnecessary noise!
I was looking for a composition that would provide a strong powerful silhouette, simple…yet still clearly telling a story.
Spot metering, composition and a little timing provided the frame I was looking for and its why I love this image!
