After I wrote on my carry-on post I knew I was going to get asked about what I packed in my check-in luggage.
So let me start off with my actual suitcase: I purchased a 61L suitcase from Roxy Australia for $199.00. While I know it might sound excessive for a short trip, I wasn’t prepared to buy a smaller suitcase for the convienence of it. I knew this wasn’t going to be my last trip, so I figured – buy the larger suitcase so you don’t have to do it again next time. Also, I like suitcases you can find easily on the carousel and I know that Roxy, as well a lot of other surf brands have great designs and patterns on them.
The suitcase has heavy duty zippers, wheels, retractable handle, hard case shell – no pockets – and built-in combination locks that you can reset anytime. On its own, the suitcase weighs 3.8kg which I think is a good weight for a large suitcase.
I wanted to save space in my luggage because I knew I was going to do a lot of shopping overseas. I wanted to pack the basic necessities with me to get me through the trip.
Now, here are the things I packed for our trip…
5 x T-shirts
I bought these on sale from Cotton On because they were cheap, light weight and easy to come by. I didn’t bother with any fancy t-shirts because I knew Joe and I would be do a lot of walking and didn’t feel the need to do anything glamourous. I bought these in black, white and gray.
5 x Bikinis
So I decided before I went on this trip that I was going to live in bikinis and not bother with bras and underware too much. I’m not top heavy so I don’t need THAT much support I’ve always found that bikini bottoms are just the most comfortable to wear in warmer weather.
I bought all of my bikinis with me: 2 pairs of Zimmermann mix-matched bikinis I bought at their warehouse a couple of years ago and 3 of my Triangl bikinis.
I also wore 2 sets of mix-match bikinis from Cotton On Body on the trip there and back.
1 pair of Havaianas
I was going to bring two pairs of Havaianas but I knew I didn’t need to. I don’t care what people say, I will pay $30 for a pair of Havaianas. I’ve never had any of them break on me and the fact that they come in many different colours is their greatest appeal to me. I have them in many different colours so I can color co-ordinate them to match my outfit. (Yes, do things like that. A lot.)
1 pair of ballet flats
While I thought that bringing Havaianas was all I needed to bring in terms of footwear, Joe told me I should bring a pair of flats because he had made reservations at somewhere fancy for my birthday.
I picked up a pair of versatile flats that I wasn’t too dressy, wasn’t too tacky, cheap and I could use it again when I got back to Sydney.
Both Havaianas and flats were packed together in a large Aesop muslin bag.
2 x pair of Shorts
I bought my Lover lace (black) shorts and a simple pair of denim shorts from Cotton On. I thought I’d bring something a little dressy just in case, but I practically lived in the denim shorts. I should have bought two, actually.
1 (maxi) Skirt
Again, I only packed this because Joe said I needed to bring something a little fancy for my birthday dinner. This is a very old skirt I believe I bought from Supré a few years ago. It was light and airy, in my favorite turquoise color and I knew I could dress it up or down.
2 pairs of Socks
I knew I didn’t need these, but I thought I’d bring them for the flight just in case.
1 Overswim Dress
This also doubled up as an outfit over shorts. They have three-quarter sleeves and pretty lace detailing on it. I also bought this at Roxy when it was on sale. Look under swimwear for other available styles.
1 pair of Harem Pants
Again, this was something I packed “just in case”. I knew that Joe and I would want to head out during the evening for dinner, where shorts might not be the best thing to wear. I bought this from again, Cotton On while it was on sale.
1 Hoodie
Another item I bought from Cotton On on sale. I find that Cotton On really had a wide variety of basics, hence why I bought a lot of my gear from there. The hoodie was oversized and very comfortable. I carried this everywhere with me and also wore it on the flight home.
1 Hat
Growing up in Australia we’ve had the ‘Slip, Slip, Slap’ embedded into our brains. So, naturally since we were going into a warmer climate, we needed to pack a hat. I bought mine from City Beach on sale.
1 beach & face Towel
I brought these, which I already had at home. A face towel from Crabtree & Evelyn and a Roxy beach towel I’ve had for years!
First Aid Kit
I packed this with my check-in, but I did carry this everywhere in my backpack. If you’re interested in what I packed in our first aid kit head over to this post.
Toiletries bag
In my toiletries bag I wanted to bring just the very bare necessities with me. I actually had to pack two bags because most of the things I wanted didn’t fit in another. The downside of being a beauty blogger is that you know all the products you want and don’t always think logically. However, I did try and be as sensible as I could. I knew I was going to do a lot of shopping over there in terms of makeup, so I didn’t want to pack too much.

Chargers
Lastly, chargers. I put everything I was going to need in a Aesop muslin bag you get when you make a purchase from them. I packed a European adapter I got from Dick Smith for $20, my external battery from Harvey Norman for my iPhone if I needed to recharge on the go. The charger for my Canon CyberShot camera as well as my iPhone dock since I was taking my iPhone and iPad with us on the trip.
Miscellaneous
A few other things I packed were large zip-lock bags I bought on eBay as well as some wash bags for dirty laundry. You can find these at Bras ‘N Things or Cotton On Body for around $5.00.
