What Does Your Birthstone Symbolize?

Wearing birthstones first became popular in Poland around the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.  A gemstone was assigned to a particular month and it was believed that if a person wore the gemstone of that month, he would receive the special powers that the gemstone had and that during that particular month the powers of the gemstone would heighten  During those times, people strove to have jewelry with the gemstone of the month and different pieces of jewelry for every month.

Even today this is a popular trend and people love to buy jewelry with their birthstone in it. People wear these pieces of jewelry for their personal and spiritual significance. Majority of the jewelry stores whether a store or online jewelry stores, sell pieces with birthstones in them. You can find birthstone jewelry in trendy inexpensive stores and even the high end jewelry store chains. You will often find people wearing their birthstone in the form of a ring, pendant, earrings, necklace and even chokers.

The official list with the gemstone associated with every  month was released in 1912.

The list was made up first by the Jeweler’s Association of America and was agreed upon worldwide as the modern standard.

The current list of  Birthstone are  as follows:

  • January – Garnet
  • February – Amethyst
  • March – Aquamarine
  • April – Diamond
  • May – Emerald
  • June – Pearl
  • July – Ruby
  • August – Peridot
  • September – Sapphire
  • October – Opal
  • November – Topaz
  • December – Tanzanite

Each and every birthstone has designated qualities associated with it. A garnet is associated with faith and truth; it is a symbol of warmth for those born in the winter month of January.  The amethyst is thought to bring luck and good health to those born in February. The soothing blue of the aquamarine introduces spring and is accompanied by qualities of understanding and happiness. A diamond is the birthstone for people born in April and with its sparkle it brings good health and courage. Jubilant new beginnings are brought to you by the birthstone for May, an enviable emerald gem that is full goodness, love and fidelity. Nobility, peace and beauty accompanies the pearl; the birthstone of June. A ruby is for those born in July and it is a symbol of love, strength and enthusiasm.August brings you the beautiful peridot birthstone, a green stone bringing with it success, peace and luck. September is blessed with the serenity and truth of the sapphire. Hope, purity and wisdom accompanies opal, the birthstone of October. Serenity and wisdom goes with Topaz, for those born in November. December’s gem is a tanzanite birthstone bringing happiness and prosperity to the end of the year.
