What Do Fleetmatics and Halloween Have in Common?

Posted on the 31 October 2013 by Fleetmatics @fleetmatics

You may already know that Fleetmatics has Irish roots since our founders hail from the emerald isle, but did you know that the celebration of Halloween also originates in Ireland? pumpkins-150x150

The origins of Halloween date back to about 2,000 years ago, when the Celts resided in the area that is currently Ireland, the UK, and northern France. The Celts celebrated their new year on November 1 because it marked the end of summer and the harvest. It also served as a reminder that a cold, dark winter was beginning … the time of year that was often associated with death!

The celebration that occurred on October 31 was called Samhain and it was believed that the ghosts of those who have died returned to earth to cause trouble. Celts also believed that these ghostly spirits were able to communicate with their priests and prophesize about what was to occur during the long winter. On the eve of November 1, these Celtic priests built large bonfires around which the Celts gathered in costume to burn crops and sacrifice animals for the deities. These ‘costumes’ were primarily made from animal heads and skins.

While the traditions and intentions of Halloween celebrations have evolved over the years, the Fleetmatics founders started off with one idea in mind: to help solve everyday business problems in a simple way.  This intent has stayed the same since its inception and Fleetmatics continues to strive to help SMBs save time, money, and fuel through its fleet management SaaS.

In light of this spooky holiday, here are some scary scenarios that fleet management can help you identify and prevent:

Side Jobs

Side jobs can increase wear and tear on vehicles, waste fuel, negatively impact customer service, and put the company at risk. A fleet management solution can help shed light to wasteful practices such as side jobs.

Inflated Timesheets

This can result in lost funds paid in excess overtime. It also can create an dishonest work environment.

Stolen Vehicles

Without GPS fleet tracking, it becomes more difficult for the authorities to locate and recover your vehicle and any equipment inside of it. A fleet management system can pinpoint vehicle location in real-time.
