IMDB Summary : Peter Parker runs the gauntlet as the mysterious company Oscorp sends up a slew of super villains against him, impacting his life.

The Amazing Spider-man 2 is one of the most anticipated films by fans of superhero movies. Of course, it’s very obvious how Spider-Man itself is one of the most popular superhero characters in the universe. Surely, hearing Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been released raises a lot of expectations from them.

Peter Parker (Garfield) continues to be haunted by his promise to the Gwen’s father (Emma Stone) to not bring his girl into trouble. That means he must stay away from the woman who he love. Coupled with the departure of the mystery of his parents, a personal problem that must be faced by Peter Parker throughout the film. Then came Hary (Dan DeHaan) little friend Peter who later became a leader in Oscorp. Hary has a hereditary disease in the family, which forced him to want to get Spider-man blood. Because he thinks it could save her life. Then Hary managed to be allied by Electro (Jammie Foxx), an electrical technician who suffered injuries to make it have super powers. Spider-Man must take pains and risked everything to fight them and at the same time to save the city from danger.

You know what it is I love about being Spider-Man? Everything!

Overstuffed, that’s the right word to describe this sequel of the Amazing Spider-man. Too much “spice stories”, too many criminals and CGI that “excessive” make the movie less  enjoyable. Interesting story can be the key of narrative aspects in a film. We can play with the main plot so that the audience could be swept away by the plight of conflict presented. But in this film it feels redundant. Stories with Parker with his parents, Parker with Gwen, Electro, Harry, and Oscorp itself, overlapping conflicts is exactly what tends to make us bored than enjoy it. Honestly, it makes it difficult to understand the Spider-man’s character itself. There may be some interesting things from the twist in the stories, but not much of the rest of it, made it very tedious.

Another thing that is disturbing is the CGI effect in this film. The effect somehow looks less realistic and cartoon-ish. Which is makes quite a gap or contrast between the Parker uses that mask and when he took off his mask. The camera angles when Spidey jumping and swinging in the city is quite presentable and attractive, as well as scenes of the battle against its enemies, but it is less able to enjoy because of the use of CGI is too “colorful”.

The only interesting thing in this film is Parker and Gwen’s relationship. Compared with the previous version (Sam Raimi), I think the character of Peter Parker (Garfield) is more interesting. He’s younger and more attractive than ever, Parker’s character is more cheerful and more humorous that it managed to give different shades for The Amazing Spider-man 2. Gwen’s character, Peter girlfriend, smart energetic and brave, Emma Stone is able to attract our attention. Although it sometimes feels a little tedious to follow the relationship Gwen and Parker to be on and off-again, but the presence of Stone is able to keep our eyes not to turn away from the screen. Seeing the end of such a story, maybe we will feel the loss of this figure in the next sequel.

Overall, you could say the presence of The Amazing Spider-man 2 is far from expectations. Our expectations about the presence of a fresh and entertaining sequel did not materialize. Compared to the previous version, certainly not excessive if it is more memorable version of its predecessor. Webb may have given the best, but in any case, to match the previous version is not an easy thing. After watching this movie to be honest I would not be going expects the presence of a next sequel.

You know what it is I love about watching The Amazing Spider-Man 2? Not Much!

Midnight’s Children (2012)
 photo Midnights-Children-_zps48feeb56.jpg

IMDB Summary : A pair of children, born within moments of India gaining independence from Britain, grow up in the country that is nothing like their parent’s generation.

Still close to our hearts how a human and lion strive to live in the sea in Life of Pi (2012). It was a magical experience, even just by seeing the visuals. But there is another successful novel set in India being adapted to a movie that year, Midnight’s Children (2012). Based on a novel with the same name written by Salman Rushdie, the movie actually tells further about India, their historical background, through the magical story of midnight’s children. The term ‘midnight’s children’ was made because there are special kids who was born in the same moments when India was born. The children have gifts, and they all meet in Saleem’s mind.

Let the poor be rich and the rich be poor.

Midnight’s Children is a story with rich flavor; there’s romance, family issues, poor/rich difference, war, friendship, and history. Therefore, it was a knowledge to see India’s rich culture and historical background. I won’t comment about it, but more on the film.

Though it was sensed to be a magical story (even without reading the novel), Midnight’s Children have a rather complicated story line. It’s actually a common thing considering it was adapted from a novel (and quite a successful one). But one might think if it’s necessary to put it all in the movie. It was said in another review that this movie might be sticking too much to the novel, that they forget to keep the magic alive. It seems that the script have already edited and wrapped to be a complete in 2,5 hours, but it left out the basic why the Midnight’s Children is worth our 2,5 hours time. Truth to be told, the stories from their grandfathers provides too many detail that this movie could fit in.

Fortunately, this movie was supported by a numerous great actors, giving their best to richness of the story; Satya Bhabha, Shriya Saran, Seema Biswas, Shabana Azmi, Anupam Kher, Siddharth Narayan, Rahul Bose, and Soha Ali Khan. The score, visuals, properties and costumes were all a top notch, which can be seen as a maximum production, which makes the movie, unfortunately, a waste.

I can only imagine that Midnight’s Children would more be a better entertainment as a 3 or 4 episodes of TV mini series (but I read that it couldn’t happen, back in the ’90s). And what would make it far better, to dig more about their special gifts and their characters, and little stories that is probably being cut from the movie. More depth on it could make viewers more sympathetic and have bond to Saleem and other gifted children.

Perhaps this movie has so many conflicts to begin with, and to create the same magic from the novel is really a big challenge. So, if you’re looking for the magic, maybe skip the movie, and just read the novel.
