Hey guys-
As of today, I have 712 people on my email blast list, 96 likes on the WWTM Facebook page, and 79 Twitter followers. In the 15 months since I've started my blog, I've received 95,157 page views...WOW!
Everyone asks me 2 questions when they meet me: 1) How/Why did you start doing this? and 2) How do you do this everyday?
First we need to take a massive step back...I LOVE TV. I always have. My Mom never said I couldn't watch TV or limited what I watched or anything, so I've always watched a lot of TV. I Love Lucy, The Flintstones, The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family, oh my god, I could go on and on. I really could, but net/net, I love TV.
I'm old enough to have had a black and white TV, a color TV, a beta max, then a VCR with the remote plugged in so you could only sit a few feet away, a DVD player, and I had the very first TiVO. Today...I have 8!
I am so incredibly fortunate to do what I love to help support my family. After 22 years on the media buying agency side, I became the media manager for Verizon Wireless. I literally have the perfect job. I work with great people, have a ton of money to spend on video content and HAVE to watch TV as part of my job!
3 February's ago, my boss at the time, asked me to shoot her TV/Industry "nuggets" each morning before she got it in. I started doing that but it was really boring, so I asked her if I could "KristyIZE" it and she said to do whatever I wanted it. So...I did. The emails got forwarded, the distro list grew and 2 February's ago, a co-worker suggested blogging. I had no idea what blogging was. I have to thank Nick Valente, he taught me everything I know and never lost patience with me ever. I'm still a novice but look how far I've come!
A long the way, I've tried different bog formats, different content, etc. but I've had to really define what the blog is and what the blog isn't and while I do watch a LOT, there's a ton I don't watch so here is a guide to WWTM for all of you newbies and for you loyalists who may not know the deal:
1) This blog is MAINLY about Primetime TV. I don't report on daytime TV at all anymore. YES, I used to report on Regis and Kelly during the quest to find the new Regis, but once Michael Strahan got the gig, I stopped reporting on it. I do still DVR it, but I rarely watch it at all unless they have a great guest. Kelly's clothes drive me nuts, and while I love Strahan, he's not the greatest interviewer in the world yet.
2) I don't watch the news. I don't watch Early Morning News, I don't watch 5pm, 6pm, 10pm or 11pm. None of it. A co-worker interested in the Early Morning News wars asked me to include the weekly ratings in the blog and since I always honor my fans requests, I include these numbers weekly.
3) Late Night...hmmmm it's hard to explain, but I will give it my best shot. I was never a late night viewer UNTIL my FBFF/FTSH (Future Best Friend Forever/Future Tonight Show Host) Jimmy Fallon entered the arena. I'm obsessed with Jimmy. Not in a sexual way (although he is adorable) but I really think that we should be and could be best friends. He's incredibly talented and I just know that if I could get over my starstruckness and hang out with him, we'd totally hit it off. So...I DVR his show every night and usually watch it the following day. If he does something brilliant, adorable, or hilarious, I will include it in the blog for all of you to enjoy.
4) Within Primetime, there are quite a few genre's I don't watch at all. It's not because the shows suck, it's just that I either have no interest or because with a full time job, a huge commute, a husband, a kid, 2 dogs, and a house...I have to draw the line somewhere. So here's what I don't watch in Primetime: News, Animation, cop shows, legal shows, medical shows, dating shows, scary shows, anything with time travel, dancing shows & food shows. I don't EVER watch or report on The Kardashians, Jersey Shore or Honey Boo Boo because it pisses me off that America made these people famous.
5) I am willing to give anything a shot...I would have never watched Scandal, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy or Game of Thrones if you guys didn't ask me to check it out. So if there's something out there you really think I should be watching...let me know.
6) I love lists, I love facts, I love feedback (good or bad) and I try to always respond.
7) There is at least one trivia question every day in the blog. Sometimes there are hidden ones in the content, but there's always one down at the bottom of the post. I post the names of the first 5 respondents and the last respondent of the day. BUT...all correct answers count toward a monthly prize, so if you know the answer...email me back with it! At the end of the month, whoever has the most points wins a $10 gift card of their choice. Amazon, Itunes, Starbucks whatever.
8) The platform no longer matters...if there's something great on Netflix (House of Cards), YouTube (Wigs/Blue) or Funny or Die and I find it...I'll write about it.
So that's my scoop in a nutshell...that's WWTM. Thanks for joining me every day and thanks for fueling my fire. I hope there's a lot more good stuff out there for us to view together.
One more thing...I do post stuff on the Facebook page and Tweet stuff out on Twitter. I'm new to this part of blogging, but I strongly suggest that you Like the Watching Way Too Much Facebook page and follow me on Twitter at Watchingwaytoomuch@tvnme. If you know another TV lover out there...share the blog with them. If you want me to add them to the email blast, shoot me their address.
Thank You!
