Wake Up With Purpose

By Melissa Boles @_mboles

Here’s a thing you probably don’t know about me: I hate waking up in the morning.  I don’t hate mornings, in fact in the Fall they are one of my favorite times of day. and if I could get that morning-time feeling while still going to bed at 2 am and waking up at noon, that would be great.  I love sleep, man, it’s the best.

However, until I have the  means to work from home and build my own schedule, I’m up at 7am (if I wake up on time) to be at work at 9am.  And it’s about my least favorite thing in the world.

So here’s what I do: I wake up with purpose.

Initially this meant that my purpose was to drink a warm beverage and read a book before work.  Other times it meant that my purpose was to get back in bed (I told you I’m not very good at this), but that is happening less and less.  And I think that’s because I finally realized that my real purpose has to be something different, something that I couldn’t turn away from.

Me.

When your purpose is to invest in and love yourself, it can make it easier to get up in the morning.  Maybe that means your purpose first thing in the morning is to invest in your body, which means a healthy breakfast and some early morning yoga.  Maybe that means your purpose is to invest in your intelligence, so you spend the morning reading a new book.  And maybe, your purpose is something that happens later in the day, but you wake up with the purpose of having a successful day to get to the happy hour, or movie with friends, or book club that’s at the end of your day.

There is always a purpose.  And sometimes the best thing to do first thing in the morning is to look in the mirror, take a deep breath, and say, “my purpose today is you.”

Have a beautiful day, love.  Spend some time loving on yourself.
