Wake by Lisa McMann

Wake by Lisa McMannSummary: For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people’s dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie’s seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.
She can’t tell anybody about what she does they’d never believe her, or worse, they’d think she’s a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn’t want and can’t control.
Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else’s twisted psyche. She is a participant.”

I’ve heard nothing but good things about this series, and even know people who have read is multiple times. So I’m not sure why I waited so long to read it! Lisa McMann visited my school (thanks, Lisa!) and we were able to pre-order books to get signed so that kind of gave me the little push I needed to get reading it.

This book is unlike any book I’ve ever read. It was sort of paranormal, but not as far fetch as most. At first it was hard for me to get into mostly because I was so confused. The way it’s set up is also different from most books so it took me a little while to get used to it. It gives you the date and time so you can tell how much time as passed, which later on I found to actually be helpful. After you’re all caught up on why things are happening it’s a really easy read.

This book is complete with the paranormal aspect of it, along with romance and also we see that Janie has a rough home life. Her mom is pretty much useless so Janie truly is raising and taking care of herself. This is sad because it really takes away from her childhood. I loved how Janie was so strong about it though. She wasn’t always whining and complaining, she accepted it and realized she was going to have to provide for herself. Who doesn’t love a strong female character? The romance in the story is also AMAZING. It wasn’t a full-blown romance novel by any means, but Janie and Cabel are perfect. Of course their relationship isn’t ideal and is far from easy but what fun would that be? I loved seeing them work together and be willing to look past certain things just so they can be together. I can only think to describe them as ‘so cute’.

One thing I’d like to say that bothered me was that when Janie would get sucked into someones dream, numerous times they’d be having the same dream. Even if it was a few years apart, the dream would be the same. Maybe this is just me, but I don’t ever recall having a repeat dream.

I cannot wait to read the second book in this trilogy, Fade! I think both guys and girls will enjoy this unique read, but I can’t exactly decide what kind of reader I would recommend this to! I think because it’s a little bit of everything, you’ll just have to read it to find out for yourself!
