WACOM INTUOS MANGA Pen Tablet

Posted on the 02 March 2014 by Geekasms @geekasms

There is more than one way to use a pen tablet.  They aren’t just for drawing. They are a mouse replacement.  From programmable Expresskeys™ to a multi-function pen stylus, the Wacom Intuos Manga is an all in one package to get any person to ditch the mouse.

A while back, I picked up a Wacom Bamboo Capture (CTH-470).  I got it for next to nothing off of an accommodation site from an old job I had.  I wanted to use it to try to draw digitally.  I was so excited when it arrived in the mail.  I unboxed it, got it all setup and tried drawing.  EPIC FAIL! I could not NOT look at where I was drawing. It was so weird to look at a computer monitor and not at the surface that I was drawing on.  I tried the next day with the same results.  I gave us, boxed it up and didn’t see it again for a year.  A few month back I figured I give it a go again.  I watched some video on Wacom’s YouTube Channel giving tips to the new tablet user. The biggest help was to ditch the mouse! I hooked up my tablet at work and removed the mouse completely to avoid the urge to use it.  Within 5 to 7 days, I was fluent enough to use the tablet without having to look at it.

At this point I started to use the table creatively at home.  I purchased Smith Micro Manga Studio 5 and began to do some collaborative pieces of art with some people I met on Google+ and deviantART.  The practice I did at work by using it instead of a mouse really made all the difference.  Wacom was extremely generous to give me the new model called the Intuos Manga.  What was once called Bamboo is now called Intuos.  The Manga refers to the package of free software that comes with it.  This model comes with Smith Micro Manga Studio 4 Debut and Anime Studio Debut 8. There is also the Intuos Pen and Intuos Pen & Touch.  Minor difference between them although the Pen & Touch model comes in a larger size.

I am really happy with the Intuos Manga.  A few advantages over the older Bamboo is that the pen comes with an eraser.  This basically adds an extra option on the pen to be programmed however you’d like.  The active surface is only slightly larger than the Bamboo but it work for me.  With the 4 Expresskeys™, you can program those to do virtually anything you want from a single function to a complex macro.  The last feature I was happy to see is the driver for the computer is updated of the Bamboo.  The single feature that makes all the difference to me is that the key functions can be programmed based on what program you are using.  When I am using Manga Studio, the pen and Expresskeys™ are programmed different than when I am browsing the web.  Total plus in my book.

The one thing I wasn’t too happy with is where the Expresskeys™ are located.  They are on the top of the tablet opposed to the side like the Bamboo and all their other tablets are.  I got used to having them on the left side and now I am on a learning curve again to get used to the new position.  Just something to get used to.  Someone else might like them better where they are now.

If you don’t like using the pen, this tablet also acts a multi-touch surface.  It recognizes many different multi-finger gestures that can be programmed to the way you want it within the preference utility.  2 finger page swipe, 4 fingers to hide all windows, whatever you like.

I think that the Wacom Intuos Manga is perfect for someone looking to start using a pen tablet. I use a tablet at work and at home. At work I am working within different programs, spreadsheets, and web interfaces. At home I do that as well as some art…given I get the time.  The tablet works for it all.  Just like anything new or different, you have to give it a chance.  I didn’t to begin with but I am glad I came to my senses because it is a great tool.
