Alexander Skarsgård is taking a break from playing vampire Eric Northman on HBO’s True Blood to act in a few major motion picture films. With Straw Dogs already in theaters, Skarsgård’s next film is Melancholia, which is about two sisters who have a strained relationship that is tested even further when a mysterious new planet threatens to smash into the Earth.
On doing new work, Skarsgård said:
“If I read a script and find a character and I don’t feel anything new about that- If there’s nothing I can learn or discover about myself I won’t get creative… If you’ve done it before, it’s not fun. To me at least.”
Skarsgård’s father has worked with Melancholia director Lars von Trier six times. Skarsgård couldn’t resist a chance to work with von Trier.
On shooting Melancholia, Skarsgård said:
“Like, even if it’s a complicated scene with cars coming in, people going in and out… and we would shoot it and 98% would be a disaster… There would be these moments or just a look or an interaction that is so brilliant.”
The sci-fi drama also stars Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland, and John Hurt.
