Held captive in a dark, remote place by a vengeful lover – that's certainly when the picture-perfect vision of a relationship had (whether it actually was as sweet and sincere as recalled or not) turns into a daunting nightmare.
Drawing on such dark and drastic scenario the music video for Beth Keeping's melodious and spirited single 'Dodged a Bullet' could be mistaken for shots of cold-blooded revenge near finalisation at first (and the song's dramatically clangorous percussive lead laid over suspense-packed guitar signatures might very well add to this angsty impression; an impression soon altered though), to be then introduced as a mental and emotional process of letting go of a delusive love affair: given a moment clear and assertive in which you find the feelings you had for someone are tainted because of his doing, a moment in which the sparks you once felt finally wear off ('fireworks turned out to be gunshots, shooting stars ended in battle scars'), you realize it's better to close a chapter in your life while you still can without hurting too much. The relief and elation thereafter, the strength and confidence necessary for putting an end to a destructive relationship, too, are – whilst already concrete through Beth' dulcet and powerful vocal performance in the chorus – visually depicted in a playfully exuberant and jaunty water-balloon fight in the woods that takes place at the very close (and fails the audience's potential expectations of a gloomy closure).
As part of Keeping's announced debut EP 'Fool' (due early 2018), the dynamically captivating and catchy 'Dodged a Bullet' (co-written with Bryony Rickard) hits a mark pre-launch, champions a happy ending (in hindsight) after a bad awakening (once the initial lover's charm subsided) – and isn't that the encouraging and reassuring message we all need to hear sometimes?
