Last month I checked out V-Wars #1 and was very impressed. It was a new take on Vampires that I found very refreshing and one of the best IDW books I’ve ever read. Issue #2 centers around reporter Yuki Nitobe and the vampires desire to have their story told.
Last issue had so much going for it with selling the story about how we all have junk DNA that could be triggered causing us to turn into vampires. There was an assassination that seemed to be by a vampire, but maybe wasn’t. All great stuff. By focusing so much of this story on Nitobe, it kind of lost me. Maybe because I just didn’t care much for her as a character. She’s a respected reporter and they need their story told so they seek her out, okay they flat out kidnap her, to convince her to hear them out. Many of these pages just didn’t do it for me, but when they introduced Kyra. Well, that’s when the story really took hold.
Kyra is part of a group of vampires that call themselves Bloods. They also refer to humans as Beats, which is pretty clever, but Bloods are just trying to live their lives. They didn’t choose what happened and they have been kicked out of jobs, churches and homes because of it. It’s another interesting twist on vampirism that I’m really, really liking.
Initially, I was afraid that this was just going to be a one hit wonder and the book wouldn’t live up to the promise of its first issue, but halfway through, Jonathan Maberry’s writing got its fangs in me again. It’s deep, it’s interesting and once again, V-Wars proves that it is a book that you should be reading.
