Teaching in other areas of theoretical philosophy will also be among the responsibilities. Further responsibilities include keeping abreast of developments within one’s own subject area and in the wider community that are of relevance for the work at the university. Assessment criteria:
Scientific and pedagogical competence: In the selection among applicants, equal emphasis will be placed on scientific and pedagogical competence.
Scientific competence is a matter of research record. In the assessment of scientific competence, scientific quality will be the primary factor. The extent of the research output, primarily as regards depth and breadth, will also be deemed important. The ability to plan, initiate and lead research and education at the post-graduate level, ability to compete for research grants, and the capacity to cooperate with others inside the field and with the surrounding society is also of importance. In the assessment of scientific competence, what will be of special importance is research proficiency in theoretical philosophy, especially philosophy of science broadly construed.
Only applicants who can be regarded as nationally leading within the area the position is in, as regards scientific and pedagogical as well as other capacities, can be eligible for the position.
Pedagogical skills will be as carefully assessed as scientific skill. Pedagogical ability should be well documented so that also the quality can be assessed. In the assessment of pedagogical skill, pedagogical quality will be the most important factor. Extent, breadth and depth will also be of importance. The ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, as well as the ability to link the teaching to research will also be important factors. Experience of supervision at the basic, advanced and graduate levels will also be taken into account. When pedagogical skill is assessed, consideration of the ability to teach philosophy of science to students and PhD students in different disciplines will be a significant factor. Experience of teaching, research collaboration, prior education, etc., in the natural sciences or technology is a merit.
All skills should be documented in such a way that both quality and extent can be judged.
Administrative and other skills are of importance and will be a factor taken into account. The capacity to collaborate with the surrounding society and to inform about research and development will be taken into account. Administrative skills are demonstrated through the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work in a way that is efficient and suited to the task at hand, as well as through the ability to set up and stick to time frames. Administrative skills also encompass general planning and the ability to work in a structured way in awareness of goals and quality. Leadership skills are demonstrated through the ability to lead projects and supervise personnel, make decisions, take responsibility, as well as to motivate and to provide others with working conditions such that common goals can be efficiently reached.
When the university hires new teachers the applicant is to be chosen who after a qualitative general assessment of competence and skill is deemed to have the best capacity to carry out and develop the tasks associated with the position and to contribute to positive development of the department’s activities.
