Fredericton campus at the University of New Brunswick (UNB)

Surveying has been taught at the University of New Brunswick (formerly King’s College) since 1840 when William Brydone Jack, Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy provided in surveying as part of his mathematics curriculum*. In 1859 when UNB was officially created, an undergraduate course in civil engineering and surveying was initiated. Since then, the meaning of “surveying engineering” has undergone a radical change and so has the geomatics programs at UNB .

UNB is olne of two Canadian schools in Canada that offer degrees in Geomatics Engineering.

At the undergraduate level, UNB offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Engineering (B.Sc.E.(Geomatics Engineering)) program. Within this program, the Cadastral Surveying Option is available. This option is recognized by the Canadian Council of Land Surveyors. Four specified technical elective courses are required to have the notation, “Completed Cadastral Surveying Option,” placed on the UNB transcript.

At the graduate program level, UNB offers the Master of Engineering (M.Eng.), Master of Science in Engineering (M.Sc.E.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs. There are six major fields of specialization: namely, advanced engineering, mining surveying, and metrology; cadastral, land information, geographic information systems, and digital mapping; geodesy and precision navigation; hydrography and ocean mapping; mapping, charting, and geodesy; and photogrammetry and remote sensing.

Two certificates in hydrographic surveying and a number of diploma programs are also offered by the Department. These are:

  • Certificate of Academic Proficiency in Hydrographic Surveying
  • Certificate of Field Proficiency in Hydrographic Surveying
  • Diploma in Geomatics Engineering with specialization in any one of:
    • Cadastral studies
    • Engineering and exploration surveying
    • Geodetic surveying
    • Mapping and geographic information
    • Program Name: Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering

See the UNB undergraduate calendar for more information.
