UBC Day 9 // What is Your Dream Travel Destination?

By Chineze @uhmayzinginez

Countries like Morocco, Tanzania, Dubai etc have always been of interest to me. My desire to visit such countries must stem from cartoons depicting the culture; accents, clothing, regional wildlife, food, mannerisms and the likes of such places. I grew up watching these cartoons and honestly, I did not see the ‘racism’ hidden in them until as an adult, my attention was drawn to the ‘racism’ as such. What I saw was portrayal of a peoples’ way of life as it was at the time. But, ahem, times change and so did cartoons.

I’m a lover of all parts of a people’s culture that does no harm to a human being. I believe if a culture affects a human being’s overall health then such culture merits reconsideration. The UBC Challenge for Day 9 asks what our dream destination is; where we would love to travel and why. Well, based on my love for culture and most things African, my dream travel locations are mostly in African countries. One of which is Zanzibar in Tanzania, East Africa. What’s your dream travel location? Why would you love to visit the country or region?

But, before you begin to travel the world, have you been to your family’s heritage home grounds? It’s the Igbo culture for every Igbo world over to return home during ‘New Yam Festivals’ / ‘August Break’. These days though, those who are unable to ‘come home’ still maintain the healthy tradition by celebrating wherever they are in the world.
Have you traveled? Where have you been?
