‘True Detective’ Looks Set to Murder the Competition

Looks like HBO has gone and done it again. That was my first reaction when I stumbled upon the trailer for their new mini series ‘True Detective’. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, written and created by Nic Pizzolatto (‘The Killing’) and directed by Cary Fukunaga (‘Sin Nombre,’ ‘Jane Eyre’), this 8 episode anthology series looks set to land in January and do more than just keep us entertained until Game of Thrones returns to the network. Now for anyone out there who hasn’t seen the trailer or have a clue what I’m on about, here is the synopsis lifted from the HBO website, because, if they can’t tell you the story what chance do I have.

In 2012, Louisiana State Police Detectives Rust Cohle and Martin Hart are brought in to revisit a homicide case they worked in 1995. As the inquiry unfolds in present day through separate interrogations, the two former detectives narrate the story of their investigation, reopening unhealed wounds, and drawing into question their supposed solving of a bizarre ritualistic murder in 1995. The timelines braid and converge in 2012 as each man is pulled back into a world they believed they’d left behind. In learning about each other and their killer, it becomes clear that darkness lives on both sides of the law.

Now it may just be me and my taste for the macabre, but this sounds like a sure fire winner to me. Once you take a look at the trailer, this theory becomes even more grounded.

Looks good to me, and if that wasn’t enough, the accompanying website http://darknessbecomesyou.com/home tops it off. Well presented with a lot of thorough content while still keeping some mystery and a few more teaser trailers about the show and the two main characters it certainly sets the scene and gives the impression HBO is putting it’s weight behind this one.

A new show on HBO, two big name actors, beautifully shot and what looks like expertly written, what more could you ask for, and with it taking its cue’s from American Horror story and taking the anthology route, each season will have a different story and a different set of characters, so there’s no telling where it could go and what other big name actors could turn up in season 2. For now though, roll on January.
