Treyarnon Bay Trip

Treyarnon BaY

I decided a trip out west was needed, so I quickly booked a room at the Treyarnon Bay YHA  (a very reasonable £20 a night for YHA members) for a couple of nights.

The plan was supposed to be simple: Work in the morning, leave Havant around 12, get to Treyarnon bay (near Padstow) about 4ish and have a surf. As with my life, nothing ever goes quite to plan.

Due to work commitments and a few personal issues, I ended up leaving at about 2:30. I got totally lost, drove in circles for a few hours and eventually arrived at the Youth Hostel at roughly 9pm. Hmmm, not the best start.

The hostel itself is actually really nice. Beautiful location, clean, friendly atmosphere, bar, restaurant and free WIFI for YHA members.

The Littlest Hobo strikes again

As it far too late for me to surf – it was dark and as I’ve never surfed this particular break before it would have been completely stupid and dangerous to get in the water – I did what comes naturally to me : Have a drink and start chatting to people.

I got talking to a group of people who’s names I instantly forgot once the introductions had been made and had a few beers. I can’t quite remember but I think the beer was called “Ginger topper” or something along those lines, It was very nice whatever it was called! A nice night was had, turned out a couple of the people I was talking to were VW nuts, so a little reminiscing about my old 1978 VW type 2 camper started. I really miss that van!

A few beers later (and a cheeky can of lager on the cliff top when the bar closed) and off to bed I went.

The best thing to hear when you wake up – if you’re a surfer

I awoke early as I always do to the sound of pounding waves and the roar of the ocean. Excited? Just a little bit! Hastely got dressed and headed down to the cliff to do a little reccy on the conditions. I liked what I saw. Smallish waves , probably about 2 foot coming in nicely in sets and a nice wind, Sandy beach break. The tide was out and I could see lots of rocks and a big old rip going on, so I’m going to have some breakfast, cup of tea and hit it when the tide is higher.

As I really don’t know the characteristics of this break at all and I’ll be concentrating on practicing my “stand up” surfing as opposed to my usual Body Boarding , I didn’t want to have to contend with unfamiliar conditions and be overly concerned with the rips etc.
