The 72nd [and final, per Amy Poehler] Golden Globes aired last night, with stars returning from their various yachts in tropical locales to get back to work. The holiday season is over, and Awards season is officially here. This red carpet did not disappoint. We were schooled in how to dominate the conversation without upstaging your husband by Amal Clooney’s gloves. In addition to gracefully receiving what felt like a wedding toast from her new husband while he was being honored, she perfectly accepted Tina & Amy’s flattering jokes at George’s expense. She also wore mismatched diamond shoulder dusters that took her to the insane next level of cool. It was Amal Clooney’s Golden Globes, and we all benefit from that. Though J. Lo certainly did her best effort to command the most attention (she certainly caught Jeremy Renner’s.) Kate Hudson too ascribed to the “show your ex what he’s missing” school of thought with her curve hugging white Versace. But we aren’t here to talk fashion – I’ll leave that to the experts. Today I’m all about the jewels, and I was very pleasantly surprised by the amount of bling on the carpet. Very few disappointments (though a big on in Katie Holmes’ COMPLETE lack of jewelry), and very many looks that had me raising a congratulatory glass of champs to the stylist behind them. The Top 5 are full of the usual suspects, but are exciting nonetheless.

Naomi Watts’ Serpenti Necklace

First of all, no human looks good in that color besides, apparently, Naomi. So I’m just going to go ahead and call into question her status as an actual Earth citizen and not some alien goddess (which, I know, I also accused Kerry Washington of.) Her chartreuse Gucci was every bridesmaid’s nightmare but made her look like a daydream (side note: Taylor Swift wore the same shade to the after parties. Coincidence or Conspiracy?) But the real star of her look was her all diamond Bulgari Serpenti necklace. Watts favors Bulgari, and always wears their jewelry well, but she pulled off this edgy, bold look effortlessly. Truly, no one else could have done this without looking gaudy or trying too hard. Naomi looked like Bulgari’s muse.

Emily Blunt’s Earrings and Bracelet

Emily Blunt, who admittedly does wear the hell out of rubies, surprised me last night. Blunt took a page from Sofia Vergara’s book and borrowed some of Lorraine Schwartz’s most fabulous and intricate creations. Lorraine hasn’t posted to her FB or Insta yet with more details (she reserves that honor for Bey and Bey only, I suppose.) They look like diamond, platinum and turquoise creations with a  floral motif, though it could be Paraiba tourmaline. The design is perfectly whimsical and evocative of Blunt’s Into The Woods fairy tale character. The statement earrings and bracelet were a perfect compliment to her messy crown braid and sleek, sexy cutout Michael Kors gown. The gown fit her like a dream, but with its spare design, it’s very likely Emily dressed around her jewelry picks (I approve.)

Salma Hayek’s Earrings

Let’s get a few things out of the way first. Brocade: it was everywhere. Not since the Year of Beige Dresses have I seen such a prominent red carpet trend. Marguilies, aforementioned Alien Space Princess Washington, and Salma all wore heavy brocade gowns with varying degrees of A-line skirts. Unfortunately for all of them, this looked like the hottest, sweatiest Gloves of all time, and brocade is just not that breathable. So strike one against Salma and let me elaborate – so you know I’ here for the jewels and nothing else. The gown on its own would have been fine…but then that belt. The same belt I bought at Charlotte Russe in 2002. And the flower in the hair! Again! Probably scooped that up at the mall in the same shopping trip! Add to this her highly styled and near-costumey hair, and this outfit was bad. Really bad. However, her stunning diamond pave ostrich feather earrings by Boucheron were one of my favorite pieces of the night. Sometimes good jewelry can save you. Take note, Katie Holmes.

Kate Beckinsale’s Earrings

Kate Beckinsale looked flawless from head to toe last night, but again – just here for the jewels. Her earrings, also shoulder dusters by Lorraine Schwartz, were perfectly matched to her gown (and makeup.) They were this rich, blackened gold that coordinated with her blackened gold and diamond bracelets. Split in two at the lobe, they dangled with two sets of diamond fringe on either side and diamond pave detailing that gave her this punk, glam look that would have been perfect at the punk themed Met Ball. I’m so glad she saved them for this though, because they were the perfect complement to her sparkly, feminine beaded and chiffon column gown.

J. Lo’s Earrings

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ll be able to pinpoint the exact moment Jennifer Lopez slayed me. I thought it was when she showed up, in general, being 45 and looking like that. But I was wrong. Once we got her on stage, bossing Billy Bob Thornton around, we got a close up of those EARRINGS. Once again, they’re diamond shoulder dusters. Once again, they’re Lorraine Schwartz. But these earrings moved like fabric made of diamonds – big diamonds. These aren’t micropave mesh that is always stunning, but has been seen around town for a while. They were like diamond blankets, dangling like scarves from her earlobes. With two diamond sashes on each earring, the effect was more, more more, and no one does that better than J. Lo – not even you, Sofia.
