Hopefully your trip will go exactly to plan, and you will have a great time, but there are so many potential pitfalls that may occur. You could be delayed on the way to the airport, causing you to miss your flight, you could be ill while you are traveling and need medical care, or your luggage could go missing. These are just a few of the myriad of different problems that could occur. It’s not pleasant to think about all this but you shouldn’t just put your head in the sand and ignore it.
Why is the time you get Travel Insurance Important?
Always remember that you don’t just need travel insurance from the date you are traveling. A major part of travel insurance is trip cancellation and you can obviously only claim this after you have purchased a policy. Hence you should ideally buy your travel insurance at the time as you start making deposits on your vacation.
When you purchase your insurance you need to make sure that you have trip cancellation insurance (TCI) so that you have cover if you need to cancel your trip before it takes place. That way if you need to cancel after you have started making payments you can get a refund on the deposits and prepayments. If you don’t have this insurance the fees and penalties that apply, especially if you have to cancel close to departure, can be high and you won’t be able to get that money back.
In addition to making sure you have TCI you need to ensure that it will cover you no matter why you decide to cancel. For instance TCI may provide cover if the hotel where you were going to stay is destroyed but not if the swimming pool cannot be used. Often you will also not be covered if a work situation prevents you from traveling. In order to prevent problems claiming if you need to cancel you should ensure you have TCI that covers you for all cancellation reasons.
This type of TCI used to be rare but is now offered by most of the big insurers. It can be an extra on a lot of travel insurance policies, although with some of the high end policies it is included. It’s important that you get the timing right for buying your policy as with most all reason TCI you need to have made the purchase within a few days of making the first payment towards your holiday and often there is a cut-off date for purchase.
Don’t take Chances with Travel Insurance
As soon as you start paying towards your holiday buy your holiday insurance. If you make sure that the policy includes any reason TCI you will then be covered if you need to cancel your trip as well as for medical problems while you are away, lost luggage, and travel delays.
