If you’re unfamiliar with Thundercat – AKA Stephen Bruner – there has never been a better time to get hip to one of the weirdest and hippest players around. Equal parts jazz fusion, indie rock, and Brainfeeder-style beat-mashing, Thundercat’s music combines live instrumentation with electronic instruments, psychedelic imagery, and an airy falsetto to produce a world all its own. “Lotus and the Jondy” is the first single off Bruner’s new record, Apocalypse (a follow up to 2011′s The Golden Age of Apocalypse), and stays true to the ‘Cat’s trademark OVER 9000 (R) vision. Some almost-Dylan-esque strumming is joined by the relentless funk of drums and a keyboard line that might have fallen off of Live: Evil. The track descends into chaos but ascends into rubato wonder at the end. Apocalypse is out 6/24; you can start lining up now if you want.
