Andy Gibb

In today’s Throwback Thursday we go all the way back to 1978. Andy Gibb was the youngest of the “Bee Gees’ brothers”. Whilst his older brothers were riding high in 1977 with their “Saturday Night Fever” album, Andy was getting ready to launch his solo career.  I particularly remember my mother playing the ”Saturday Night Fever” LP non-stop in 1977. Even though I liked the Bee Gees music, I always thought they were too hairy (I was 9 years old after all…) but then in 1978 I laid my eyes on the 20-year-old Andy Gibb and fell in love immediately. Andy was only 19 years old when he released his biggest hit “I Just Want To Be Your Everything”. To this day, it’s one of my favorite tracks and memories from the 1970s. It’s quite clear from my previous posts clear that I was also a massive ABBA fan back then. There are two TV specials that aired in 1978 and 1979 respectively that have been forever etched in my memory as huge occasions and I waited for weeks for the them to air. Both TV specials, The Olivia Newton John TV Special in 1978 and A Concert for Unicef in 1979, not only starred ABBA but Andy Gibb as well. (You can actually watch both of those shows in their entirety if you click the links.) I vividly remember in his flair trousers and beautifully coiffed hair. I was becoming a teenager and thought he was sooo good looking.

During the late 70s I remember some gossip that Andy was linked to Olivia Newton-John romantically. I don’t think there was any truth to those rumors in the end but they did sing this ultra romantic duet at the Unicef concert in 1979. It was released as a single that same year. It still melts my heart today, some 30 years later I first saw it on TV.
“Lay your troubles on my shoulders
Put your worries in my pocket
Rest your love on me awhile.”

It was not all smooth sailing for Andy in the end. He had sold millions of albums when only in his late teens, but he also fought a long battle with drug addiction and depression and died only five days after his 30th birthday. But more than anything, this is how I remember him: Young and  beautiful, sitting next to Olivia Newton John, singing a beautiful love song. I miss you, Andy.
