Thirsty Thursday: Sapphire Cocktail Ring

By Raymondleejewelers @raymondleejwlrs

With the arrival of September, there’s only one gemstone on our mind, and that would be the regal sapphire. No other gemstone comes close to capturing our hearts (ok maybe emeralds do) in the colored gemstone department. Sapphires, a part of the conundrum family, are available in both fancy colors and its trademark blue hue. It is the rock of choice for royalty, it’s fun to imagine Game of Thrones characters saying, and it’s absolutely breathtaking in its most prestigious form: huge and surrounded by diamonds. We think the sapphire cocktail ring is the most timeless, classic, the most formal, and the most elegant (again, don’t tell emeralds we’re saying this and we reserve the right to change our minds come May) of the gemstone dinner rings. Even though it is deep blue, it pairs marvelously with gowns of any color, even black, and mixes well with any diamond jewelry you already own. It’s just the right ring to pop on to your right hand and gesture wildly, all the better to capture attention at your next big night out on the town. And today’s cocktail? Well it’s nothing if not perfect for grabbing attention.

Ceylon sapphire and diamond ring

PLATINUM 5.40CT CEYLON SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND COCKTAIL RING

This ring is – in short – amazing. But we’ll elaborate. The center stone is a huge 5.40 carat cushion cut Ceylon sapphire. These particularly bright and blue sapphires are found almost exclusively in Sri Lanka, which was formerly known as Celyon. These sapphires are renowned for their distinctive bright blue with almost violet undertones. They possess remarkable clarity, making them the ideal choice for big sapphire rings. Thanks to the beautiful cool and fluorescent undertones these sapphires pair magnificently with diamonds, accenting their fire and brightness. This ring features nearly three carats of white diamonds (2.88ctw to be exact): 10 round brilliant diamonds flank the top and bottom of the sapphire while two gorgeous trapezoid shaped step cuts hug either side. All of the stones are set into platinum and all are F/G in color and VS in clarity. Despite the relatively massive size of the ring it maintains a low profile so it won’t catch on silk gowns or blouses (or your favorite Chanel boucle jacket if you are so inclined). A ring like this requires an equally exquisite beverage to swill; because we like to imagine this sapphire is winking devilishly at us, we think a Blue Devil cocktail is just the ticket.

The Blue Devil is a gin based cocktail created by mixing together 1 and a half ounces of dry gin (Boodles is a good choice) with three quarters of an ounce of lemon or lime juice, another three quarters ounce of maraschino and a drop of blue food coloring (so luxe) to color your cocktail. ALthough if you’re trying to match a blue this vivid it might just take a few extra drops of it so you’re perfectly color coordinated. Cin Cin -or, since we’re loving on Sri Lankan sapphires after all - Seiradewa!
