Things to Consider Before Installing a Sunken Bath

If you’re thinking of remodelling your bathroom and giving it a new lease of life in the New Year, you might consider installing a luxury, sunken bath

Sunken baths are a luxurious addition to any home. They seem to embrace the historic culture of roman baths, whilst still being viewed as a modern and streamlined addition to a 21st century home.

Will it Work?

If you’re planning to fit a sunken bath you will need to consider the space, underfloor space and plumbing access – having to rip up your bathroom to repair a bath tub leak is not fun!

Fitting a sunken bath is not an easy job, you will almost always need a professional to assist in the project. There are two types of sunken bath, one fully sunk in the floor – where you bathe under the floor level. The other is created by building up part of the bathroom floor and adding access steps – this offers the luxury feel of a sunken bath but without as much hard work.

Things to Consider Before Installing a Sunken Bath

For a fully sunk-in bath you need to ensure you have the space underneath the floor boards to fit it, as well as an access point to the pipes in case of repairs or leaks later on. This job will require a lot of work and not all houses will be suitable for this kind of project.

An easier, cheaper and more accessible way to achieve the sunken bath is to raise the ground around it, and to install steps to get in. This doesn’t necessarily require a bigger bathroom than the other type of sunken bath, but it will reduce the size.

If you’re planning on placing a heavy tub, or using a large amount of concrete to build up around the sunken bath on the second or third floor of your home, it may be necessary to reinforce the floor to protect the bathroom from falling in below.

Will your Investment be Worth it?

Do you enjoy taking a bath – does everyone else in the family too? Will installing the bath replace a shower, if so, how will it affect your family? Are you a family who showers and bathes the night before, or the morning of – will replacing a shower with a bath change your homes ‘getting ready’ dynamic?
Do you have very young children, or are you planning on having any? A sunken bath is a lot easier to fall in and cause injury, than a regular bath with higher sides. If you have raised the floor around the bath in order to ‘sink it’, be weary of sharp corners and edges, steps and a lot of tiles.

Are you planning to move house any time soon?Adding a sunken bath will add value to your home, as well as appealing to people with a more luxurious taste, however the initial cost pay be more than the increase in the house price.
