Theodore Wirth Park... the Minneapolis Park That's About the Same Size as NYC's Central Park

By Homesmsp @HomesMSP

With 759 acres, Theodore Wirth Park is the largest park in the Minneapolis park system... close to the size of New York City's Central Park. It contains 18-hole, Par 3 and disc golf courses; a winter recreation area for cross county skiing, snowboarding and tubing; a lake with swimming beach; a wildflower garden and bird sanctuary; a quaking bog... and miles of trails for both biking and hiking, part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway.

Located midway between Highway 100 and downtown Minneapolis, Theodore Wirth Park is on the western edge of Minneapolis, with much of the park actually in neighboring Golden Valley. Like NYC's Central Park, you would never guess you are in the city until you see the city skyline in the distance across the golf course.

If you were to look at the photo above, you would likely think we were just walking on a path in the woods. But no, we are actually walking on a floating boardwalk on a bog of sphagnum moss anchored by over 900 mature tamarac trees (deciduous pine trees). One of the most unique natural sites in the Twin Cities, Quaking Bog is a 5-acre acid bog about 3700 years old. This rare and sensitive ecosystem is a true wilderness phenomenon... yet another example of the blend of nature and city in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area that helps create our distinctive sense of place.

We discovered an abundance of mushrooms when we visited the park last week... alas, no morels...
