It has been a few years since I have been asked to do a book review, so I was more than happy to say “Yes” when Pen and Sword approached me.
They have a published a series of Gardening titles and I was given a choice of five books from which I selected two to review. My first review, the second will follow soon, is a book called:-
The Wildlife Gardener, written by Kate Bradbury, author, journalist and a passionate wildlife gardener.
The book is full of really useful advice, ideas and information enhanced with photographs taken by Julie Watson which really makes this a beautiful book.
Kate gives practical advice on the best pollinating plants, bird feeding and organic methods of pest control. It explains how to make wildlife corridors, a mini cairn, suggests plants for a bog garden and making small ponds. It is a fabulous guide to creating wildlife habits.
The second part of the book introduces wildlife creatures, what they do and how to encourage them to love living in your garden.
With the decline of wildlife in our gardens, this is a great, inspiring and useful book to have. It is also an ideal book to go through with children to help them learn and appreciate wildlife.
Kate Bradbury has even helped me accept that weeds, although not necessary in a wildlife garden, the right ones such as Dandelions, Bird’s Foot Trefoil and Ragwort can enhance it.
