The Walking Dead Bourbon Whiskey Review

By Josh Peters @TheWhiskeyJug

I am a nerd. About a lot of things, but specifically about whiskey and comic books. I have been reading and collecting comics since I was 6 and been geeking out about whiskey since I was 25… I’m almost 40. So yes, I’m a bit excited about The Walking Dead Bourbon Whiskey which is a beautiful combination of two things I love: TWD which I’ve been reading since the beginning and Heaven Hill bourbon.

The Walking Dead Bourbon Whiskey

Being a longtime fan of the comic and the show I’m a bit sad to see it all end. Wit the comic, for thirteen years, I’ve looked forward to the monthly updates in the lives of Rick and the crew. On the TV show I’ve been looking forward to my yearly binges, when it came up for streaming, for nearly 10. To say it’s been a part of my life is an understatement. But comics are comics and whiskey is whiskey and this is a bourbon review so we’ll focus on that.

In Diageo’s Words:

From the creators of The Walking Dead comes a limited-release Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey like no other. With a light caramel nose, taste of fruit, and a smooth and spicy finish, this whiskey is crafted for the living but sought out by the dead.

Tasting Notes

EYE
Caramel

NOSE
Caramel, oak, vanilla, dark fruit, peanuts and spice.

PALATE
Caramel oak, vanilla, peanuts, spice and butter with a touch of herbal notes popping in.

FINISH
Med -> Oak, caramel and vanilla.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Good sense of balance, medium body and a soft easy feel.

This is a decent whiskey. It’s light, it’s easy, but it isn’t gutless. There’s a bit of meat on these bones an it makes for something worth drinking as you finish out the next season… or the end of the books.

The Walking Dead Bourbon Whiskey Review: Overall and Score

I’d honestly be surprised if this wasn’t Heaven Hill. Aroma is warm and sweet with a nutty hint that screams Heaven Hill to me; Palate marches along the same lines and brings with it a light herbal touch; Finish is sweet and soft and gone before you know it.

There is nothing daring or unique about The Walking Dead Bourbon Whiskey. It’s just good bourbon in a fun bottle celebrating a decent show derived from an utterly amazing comic book. If you’re a fan of one or both then it’s definitely worth a taste. Me, I’ll be sipping on this while re-reading the final chapters of Rick and crew in Compendium 4 over the upcoming holiday break.

“Rest in peace; now get up and go to war. We are the walking dead” – Rick Grimes

SCORE: 3.5/5

*Disclosure: This bourbon was graciously sent to me by the company for the purposes of this review. The views, opinions, and tasting notes are 100% my own.
