European turtle doves form strong bonds and the rather small dove with the wedge-shaped tail with a dark centre and white borders and tips is a threatened species. The UK turtle-dove population is halving every six years - down 93% since 1994.
In Spring, turtle doves arrive on the British shore after a long migration from West Africa. And often they find that their breeding grounds have been lost to modern farming methods. The birds are struggling to find food to raise their chicks.
Think about what it would feel like if they never returned?No purring would be heard in the summer.
How can we save animals and plants from extinction using turtle doves as inspiration?
Turtles doves are emblems of love and faithfulness and they have even inspired poetry in Shakespeare, "The Phoenix and the Turtle."
Love is a strong feeling and connecting with nature is important to save animals. We need to change the way we look on nature and see things. We need to fall in love with life on Earth. By doing anything for the benefit of Earth, our Earth will love and to anything of us.
To love is to be connected, to be one.Two turtles doves are a symbol of friendship and love. Together we can make a greater impact to save endangered animals.
We made a list with things we love about turtles dove.
- they make a soft lovely purr - turrrturrr-ing
- they have fine feathers
- they have interesting orange eyes
Then we made poster to encourage people to act.
To love turtles doves is to act to save them.
