The Sky’s The Limit When You’re A Momtrepreneur

By Lamamma @LAmamma1

We’ve all been raised to believe a lie. We’ve been led to believe in the myth of gender equality in the workplace. Generation after generation of young girls pass through the education system only to be brought down to reality with a thump when they encounter the realities of contemporary business. Despite the efforts of many trailblazing women in business and the sincere desire of many forward thinking enterprises to do the right thing, we’ve still yet to achieve true workplace equality. We still have women in the workplace subjected to casual misogyny, pregnancy discrimination and a gender pay gap that the World Economic Forum estimates may take over 200 years to close. 200 years!?! In a job market where they only ever seem to have the outside track, it’s little wonder that more and more women are drawn to the idea of entrepreneurship so that they can take their careers and their livelihoods into their own hands.

Many women, upon giving birth to their children, see the advent of motherhood as a paradigm shift… Which it is. Motherhood is a transformative experience which actually changes your brain chemistry. All the worries, insecurities and anxieties that once crippled them now seem insignificant and just another challenge to be conquered. Thus, if you are a new Mom who’s reluctant to return to the world of work, do you have what it takes to take on the world of entrepreneurship? Here are 5 perfectly good reasons why you should at least consider it…

Get paid to do what you love

If you hated your day job, if you felt bored, overworked, understimulated or under appreciated, you’re not alone. In fact, a staggering 85% of people polled last year said that they hated their jobs. Many of us, once we have to keep the bills paid and the roof over our heads find ourselves making a difficult choice. We must do something that brings us purpose or we must do something that pays the bills. And as the cost of living continues to skyrocket, the need to pay the bills will always win out.

The beauty of entrepreneurship is that it allows you to build a business that’s built around your passions, skills and aptitudes. While it may be stressful, demanding and rigorous in many of the same ways your old job was, you’ll be making money to do what you love. You can either start off as a side hustle alongside your day job or go all-in, but however you choose to build your business, you can spend every day doing something you’re passionate about. And if you can do that… You’ll never work a day in your life!

Do business on a global scale

What a wonderful time it is to be alive. The digital age affords us so many opportunities today that we could scarcely have dreamed of a scant few decades ago. In an age of global interconnectivity, you may well find that the most lucrative market for the products or services your business will offer isn’t even the one in which you live. Many businesses around the world have found success in international trade. If you have the stomach for the intricacies of global trade; and if you want to learn more about it click this link to start now, your business could well be an international player. In an age where digital communication puts us within such easy reach of the rest of the world it seems a shame to limit your capabilities to the domestic market.

Master your work / life balance

It’s easy to assume that entrepreneurs simply don’t have work / life balance; that their dedication to their businesses enslaves them to their laptop screens 24 hours a day. But while many entrepreneurs do start out this way they learn that all this slavish devotion accomplishes is a quick burnout. Taking the time to establish your work / life balance is one of many skills that you’ll need to master for success in business, but once you can achieve this difficult balance you’ll have a freedom that your old job never afforded you.

You’ll never again have a request for time off denied. You’ll never again have to miss a school play or a little league baseball game because you had to work late. When you’ve built the right team, you’ll have the peace of mind to know that you can take time off to live your life and know that your business is in the best possible hands.

Build your very own team

Very often the people with whom we work can make even the most tedious of jobs tolerable and even enjoyable. The trouble is that beloved colleagues leave, get promoted or move to different departments and we don’t always get on quite as well with their replacements. The beauty of entrepreneurship is that you get to build your very own team of employees who will not only be a good fit for your business but who you will get along with personally. A team of people you get along with and in whom you’re personally invested will help you to navigate even the most arduous aspects of entrepreneurship with a big ol’ smile on your face.

Inspire the younger generation

As we limp towards a future that truly embraces gender equality, surely one of the most rewarding and important aspects of Momtrepreneurship is knowing that you’re helping to inspire the younger generation. You’re showing not only your own daughters but young girls everywhere that they have the power to change their lot if the world of work does not offer them everything they were sold. By eschewing the world of work for establishing your own business you’re smashing the glass ceiling that has kept so many women from their full potential.

Momtrepreneurship can allow you to throw off the shackles of the workplace and make your mark on the business world. It can empower you to take your career into your own hands and when you have the courage to do that, well, the sky’s the limit!
