Writing songs should definitely be considered an art form. People who write their own songs often feel accomplished and proud when they, or another artist performs their work. However, you can’t just scribble some words on a page and hope for the best. There are certain secrets you should use to make your songs amazing. Just take a look at Liam and Noel Gallagher. Liam isn’t very good at writing songs. Noel is amazing. Every song Noel churns out seems to be catchy and big with his fans – he wrote most of Oasis’ hits, which many of us consider to be classics. Tell a Story
Tell a story with your music. It can be something that really happened to you, or something that you are imagining. Ed Sheeran has said that many of his songs are written about real things that happened to him. However, Noel often admits that his songs are totally made up off the top of his head. It doesn’t even need to be a story about love; Ben Howard has a song on ‘The Wolves’ where he talks about a touching conversation he had with his friend.
Play an Instrument
Most great songwriters play an instrument. They understand how a song will sound as they write it. If you can play an instrument, you’re already halfway to writing your own songs! Singer/songwriters like Tiffany Alvord knew they needed to play an instrument to get to where they wanted to be.
Free Write
Following on from the ‘make stuff up’ theme, just free write and see what you can come up with. Don’t think about it too much. Just get some words down on paper. This will help you to open up your mind and let your imagination run wild. The more you free write, the more you’ll feel like you can write imaginative songs.
Take Inspiration from Things Around You
Take all kinds of inspiration from things around you. For instance, street names, like The Beatles and ‘Penny Lane’. You could take shop names, you could use brand names, anything you feel will help you to write your song.
Say Things That Don’t Make Sense
OK, so we’ve already discussed that the songs you write don’t need to be true or factual. Did you know that they don’t even need to make sense? Some of the most famous lyrics are ‘we are the egg men, I am the Walrus’ and ‘Mr. Sifter sold me songs when I was just 16. Now he stops at traffic lights but only when they’re green’. You can do lots of research on these lyrics and come up with theories behind them, but if we’re honest, they don’t make a whole lot of sense. Don’t be afraid to say things just because they rhyme or sound good.
