The Secret Circle 1x07: Masked

Original Air Date: 27 October 2011

Storyline: Deciding the Circle needs to have a little fun, Faye convinces Cassie to throw a big Halloween party. Intent on wooing Jake back, Faye goes all out on her Halloween costume. After a fight with Diana, Adam turns to Cassie for advice. Meanwhile, some dangerous, uninvited guests set their sights on the Circle. Best Quote:

Faye: I'm impressed that you agreed without me having to resort to blackmail.
Cassie: No, I just... I think it'll be a good break for us. Halloween's the night to pretend you're someone else, right?
Faye: Sluttier versions of someone else, but I get your point.

Review: I've gotten over Halloween episodes in fantasy series ever since Buffy, and man, they knew how to do it back then! But we're dealing with an entirely different quality when it comes to the audience and showrunners don't seem to try that hard anymore.

Despite there being a lot happening, I have to complain about the slow pace again. There were some revelations - like that of Cassie's origin - and the Circle discovered a new danger, but it all seemed too build rather slowly and without any real suspense.
The witch hunters got a step closer toward eliminating the Circle, and apparently there's a special concoction that's used to kill a witch and make sure the magic is not passed on to someone else, like Nick's was passed on to Jake. The whole organization seems more like a religious cult - "Watch the witch, but never trust him, for his every thought is a sin, his every word a lie." - and the trade is passed on through generations, just like magic. Which means that, whatever they do, the Circle will never be rid of the hunters.
Biggest surprise of the evening: Luke being a witch hunter, Diana turning Adam down even after his "you're my home" speech, or Cassie being John Blackwell's daughter and possessing black magic? Of course, we must go with the latter. I knew something was off about Cassie's father, but I'd never thought a sweet girl like her could actually be part dark. It's fitting, though: not only does she have to lead the Circle and fight the people and demons that come after them, she also has to fight her own nature. And me thinking Faye was the bad one...
And was it her dark side that allowed Cassie to do magic by herself and save Diana from being killed - and set Luke on fire eventually? (And why does this show keep killing cute guys?) There are a lot of questions - not a bad thing to keep us guessing - and another one is, how do you kill a witch who possesses black magic?
Jake is actually becoming an interesting character. I thought, after last week's episode, that he was somehow capable of turning his back on the witch hunters eventually, but threatening and eventually killing Calvin Wilson showed his true colors. Sounds judgmental, but I swear it's not. I'm a fan of cute bad boys. But it will take a while before Cassie will be able to trust him again - if she ever will.
Despite the whole hunter stuff, the most powerful scenes were those between Adam and his father and Adam and Diana. It's a good thing to see him fight for her and stand up to Ethan in the process. He may be doing it for the wrong reasons, though: it must me hard for a kid to listen his father talk about a woman who wasn't his mother his whole life, so he would want to prove that the whole fate talk is just that - talk. But I don't doubt that Diana really is his home - they've been each other's best friends since childhood.
The ongoing theme of this show seems to be generations. Not only the witches' - with the Elders trying to keep everything in place, Dawn and Charles wanting their powers back and the children caught in a dangerous game - but also the hunters'. And guess what? The six families from the Circle are not the only witches in Chance Harbor. What is this, some kind of hellmouth? OK, wrong type of supernaturals, but you get my drift. It's always the small towns that get caught up in stuff like this. The Secret Circle 1x06: Wake Back to Season 1
