Catania teatro greco romano

Catania's theater near the palaces of XVIII century

Catania is one of the cities that I love a lot in the beautiful Sicily. Its bright colors and the smile of the people always welcomed me with hospitality. Under  the touristic point of view Catania has a multitude of realities , starting from the Greek and Roman splendor , across the middle ages , up to the XIX century and the contemporary age. I’m always astonished by  the beauty of the Roman theater.

The entrances  are called vomitoria like in the coliseum and in all the Roman theaters. This theater is located near  the acropolis of the ancient city . The cavea – this name is original Latin – is very well preserved . This semicircular part of the theater  was  destined to the audience. A small section of marble separates the cavea from the orchestra area . Try to imagine this place as the fulcrum of the Catania’s life in the past – while today it is only a memory of the ancient times. The chromatically alternation between black and white  - willfully created-   had given  an impressive visual impression.  Unfortunately this chromatic effect has been taken away from the centuries. Today the theater is surrounded by some historic buildings from the XVIII century that create  a suggestive set, but there is a  different impact than the original architectural ensemble . Anyway, what can you do? Every time  has its influence on  the surrounding environment and the history can only remember nostalgically  the past , the same past that seems always more positive than the present time . This is what we feel now about the past and what the next generations will think about us . Info Where is this theatre via V.Emanuele, 266
