The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Review

By Wickedying @wickedying

Hello everyone! I am so hyped to be back writing a post to share with you something about my latest craze. Yes, I’m all about skincare products these days!

I dutifully waited and observed the results before sharing with you my thoughts about Deciem’s The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid serum. After watching a ton of makeup tutorial videos on YouTube, I learned about the importance of skincare and how it should be treated more as an investment. Let’s face it, we are not getting any younger and I think our mid to late 20’s are the best time to start your very own regimen.

The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Review
Hyaluronic acid or HA for short is mainly used for skin hydration. You usually see it as sodium hyaluronate or something like hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid in the ingredients list across many moisturizers and toners. It’s classified as a humectant which means it draws water from the environment into the skin. It works within the deeper layers of our skin. Thus, giving it a plump and smooth appearance. Take note that HA serums are best applied while the face is still damp, preferably after washing your face or after toning. I have learned this the hard way and used up an entire bottle before learning how it’s properly applied. Lol!

There are different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid. A typical HA serum contains around 3 molecular levels. Premium products can contain up to 5 molecular weights. The Ordinary HA has about 3. It is important to note that the lower the molecular weight, the deeper it can penetrate into the skin and do its magic. You may check out The Ordinary’s description and ingredients of their Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 below:

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) can attract up to 1,000 times its weight in water. The molecular size of HA determines its depth of delivery in the skin. This formulation combines low-, medium- and high-molecular weight HA, as well as a next-generation HA crosspolymer at a combined concentration of 2% for multi-depth hydration. This system is supported with the addition of Vitamin B5 which also enhances surface hydration. A more advanced HA formulation with 15 forms of HA, including precursors of HA, is offered by our brand NIOD in Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex

Note: Hyaluronic Acid is found in the skin naturally but its natural function within the skin is not hydration. Many products have used HA to claim hydration benefits, but HA is too large of a molecule to penetrate the skin and instead sits on the surface and can draw moisture out of the skin making the surface feel soft and hydrated temporarily, while making you feel like you need more HA after the product is rinsed. This formula uses three forms of HA with varying molecular weights, as well as an HA crosspolymer, to offer multi-depth hydration and visible plumping without drawing water out of the skin solely to improve temporary surface hydration.

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer, Panthenol, Ahnfeltia Concinna Extract, Glycerin, Pentylene Glycol, Propanediol, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, PPG-26-Buteth-26, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Citric Acid, Ethoxydiglycol, Caprylyl Glycol, Hexylene Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin.

How to Apply:

After washing my face, I apply a cleansing or acid toner first followed by a hydrating toner or an essence. While my face is still damp, I put a couple of drops of HA on my fingertips and warm it up with my hands then pressing it onto my skin.

Final Thoughts:

Hydration is essential no matter the skin type. If you have dry skin, you need hydration. If oily, you need hydration as well since your body is overproducing oils to compensate.

This is one of my first serious purchases committing myself to start a skincare regimen. I have finished 4 bottles of The Ordinary HA + B5 so it’s safe to say, I love it. My dry patches were gone within a week of using this AM/PM in conjunction with my toners and moisturizers of course. Will I continue using it? Absolutely! This definitely is on top of my ‘holy grail’ products. It gives a supple and bouncy feel to the face. Anyways, I am also looking forward to try out their Marine Hyaluronics which is a more watery version than this one.

If you enjoy reviews like this one, please let me know. I’m planning to share with you The Ordinary products plus some of the Asian skincare stuff I have been using.

Stay wicked!
